RE: I broke my registry, I think...

Hi, after reading the responses below, I'm sad to hear many of the replies.
Yes, a final resolve would be to Re-Format and Re-install (takes a long time,
especially if ya don't have some sort of backup for your programs). However,
in contrary to what "Bruce" said about Vista not having a "Repair Tool", this
is not quite true. Check out this link to using Vista Start-Up Repair:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f3f351033.mspx
I've been working with Windows since version 3.11 came out. I've used about
all of them (95,98,2K,XP,XP-Pro 32+64, Media-Ctr, and now Vista-32).
I run "Bit-Defender " security (bitdefender.com). It's has a Reg-Cleaner
that works great in eliminating Orphaned registry entries and Optimizing the
Registry File :) Unlike Norton/Symantec, it will Unistall itself Clean so
you can install another A/V package if you like :)
Hope the repair tool can help you.

If you do a reformat and reinstall of Windows, having a backup of your
programs is useless.

Except for a very occasional exception (usually a very small program)
all programs have many entries in the registry as well as associated
files and pointers to them within the Windows folder. All of this is
lost when Windows is reinstalled and the programs won't run.

If you reinstall Windows cleanly you have to reinstall all your
programs from the original media.

Yes Ken, After a "Format" and/or "Complete Re-Install" of Windows, one would
have to have the original install CDs or software in order to ALSO
"Re-Install" the programs. However, Using the "Windows Repair Facility", it
may not be necessary in all cases. I have recovered my older software
installs on several occasions without having to re-install them. NOT in the
case of a complete Windows Re-Install or Format then Windows install however.
:) Depends whether or not The repair facility has enough information to
complete the registry entries for the pertinent software that is installed.
If not, then a Re-Install of the software or Program is necessary.
Ultimately, depends on the amount of damage to the operationing system
("Windows") and it's components. However, there MAY be a STRONG Possibility
that you can retrieve "Saved Games" or pertinent Saved Data files for various
software... BEFORE FORMATTING the Hard Drive! Once you copy the file(s) to
REMOVABLE MEDIA, Then, Format or Completely Re-Install Windows. Once the HD
has been formatted, Windows RE-Installed, The Software in question
Re-Installed... AND ALL UPDATES (Windows and Software are complete) Simply
copy the saved files into their appropriate locations for your software
areas. (Remember to create the necessary "Folder-Names" for the data files
to be placed in)... Helps to simplify returning them to the proper folders on
the hard drive after the everything else has been properly Re-Installed and
Updated :)
