Gears of War shuts down at load screen

GOW won't stay up. I've downloaded the patches, and still won't run. I have
a:
Gateway P173XL-FX laptop
4 Gig memory
nVidia GEForce 8800 (gateway modified, of course)
Windows Vista Ultimate, 64 bit

I've tried downloading the latest nVidia drivers, but they won't load.
nVidia tells me that Gateway modified the card, so nVidia's drivers can't be
loaded. Gateway has nothing for me. I'm pretty sure it's the graphics
card/memory problem people are talking about, but I haven't been able to
solve it.

Anybody got any ideas? Thanks for any help you can give me.

BTW, Crysis runs with NO problems on high settings.

Re: Gears of War shuts down at load screen

Did you contact Gateway support and ask if they have
any available BIOS or video adapter updates available
for your specific Gateway model number?

If Crysis will run, then you know the issue is with Gears of War not liking
something on your computer. It could be the video card, the power supply,
the sound, anything. You could replace the video card, but from a practical
standpoint you'd be better off spending the money on a console and playing
Gears of War on it instead. A top-end video card would cost more than an
Xbox 360 and you would have no way of knowing that Gears of War would run
on your computer.

I won't say PC gaming is exactly dead like many industry people do, but this
is exactly why consoles work so well. Unless there is a rare glitch, when
you buy Gears of War for the Xbox 360 you know it will work.

Sorry for your troubles. The only other thing I can suggest is to look for a
user forum for the game and post there.

Yes, and my boys who are the gamers in the family (Mom just buys the
equipment!) say that some games like FPS are definitely better on the PC. I
was just trying to let you know that you're not alone and give you some
other ideas, albeit limited, if updating the video drivers from Gateway
and/or BIOS* doesn't work.

*Don't update your BIOS unless it looks like some real issues you are having
will be fixed. Nowadays updating a BIOS isn't as hard as it used to be but
it still carries a risk. The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset
really does apply strongly to flashing your BIOS.

Hope you get this resolved and good luck,

Malke
