Assuming you have 32-bit Vista, you have a 32-bit (4GB) address space.
Some of that space must be used to access video RAM, BIOS, etc. What's
left over is used for system RAM, which means you will not be able to
use a full 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit machine (see
http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html).

The usual result is 3.1 GB or so being used. 2GB sounds quite low, but
you should figure out how much RAM is on your video card, some of the
new ones have a TON of memory onboard.

Vista SP1 always reports the amount of RAM installed, not the amount
used. So it will tell you about your 4GB, and never let on that it
can't use all of it.

Wrong. 32b Windows OSs will support a tad over 3GB; maybe 3.1, maybe
3.3, depends on your hardware. The arithmetic is 4GB minus some that
is used for accessing the VGA and a few other pieces of I/O gear.

Not correct. The number varies depending on your hardware
configuration, but can be as high a approximately 3.5GB. Read the
other message I just posted in this thread.

Also not correct. The actual memory limit varies, depending on what
edition of Vista it is. Here are the correct numbers:

Home Basic 8GB
Home Premium 16GB
Business 128GB
Enterprise 128GB
Ultimate 128GB

<Sigh> We've been over this again and again and....

You won't be able to use all 4GB in 32-bit Vista or XP, that's true.
You will probably be able to use more than 3GB, it depends on how much
address space your BIOS and video RAM take. See
