In the course of our talk, ZDNet Editor in Chief Larry Dignan asked me what
I would do to fix Vista's tarnished brand if I were in charge of Microsoft's
marketing for a day. OK, I'll take the job, but on two conditions: First, I
want face time with Steve Ballmer and Steven Sinofsky. Second, I want some
of those dollars Steve was going to fork over to buy Yahoo, because cleaning
up the Vista mess is gonna cost some bucks.

The context of the conversation, of course, is Microsoft's campaign to
"fight back" against Vista's poor reputation and Apple's relentless
Vista-bashing ad series. Mary Jo Foley has more details in her report from
Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston. I'm hearing the same
messages in my conversations with Microsoft executives and product managers.

In classic Microsoft style, they can be distilled into three key points:

* Hardware and software partners weren't ready for the launch. As Mary Jo
reports, Windows honcho Brad Brooks "acknowledged that partners stopped
believing that Microsoft would ever manage to ship Vista and thus didn't
prepare adequately for the launch of the operating system."
* Many of the architectural changes, especially those involving security and
device drivers, caused existing hardware and software to work poorly or not
at all. Most of those issues have been fixed in the past 18 months, and the
exceptions are generally older products whose owners have decided not to
invest in Vista support.
* Windows Vista as it exists today is not the same product that Microsoft
shipped back in November 2006. Service Pack 1 is the biggest fix, of course,
but Microsoft has been delivering bug fixes and compatibility updates
continually via Windows Updates

There's a great deal of truth in that summary, but it's not the whole truth.
It misses the mark dramatically by not acknowledging the negativity in the
market and in the press and confronting it head on. More importantly, it
doesn't include any serious 'fessing up to the series of blunders that
Microsoft has committed over the course of Vista's development and release.
This week one of Microsoft's top executives admitted that the changes in
Vista "broke a lot of things" and "caused . a lot of pain." Usually, that
sort of confession is followed by "I'm sorry" and "Here's what we're going
to do to make up for that pain."

First of all dan-o, I don't do any computing from my kitchen table like
you do.
Secondly, I'm sure MS has much more marketing expertise than I do
concerning their products.
They just need to use it.

Wanna know what they should do?

They should take in community ideas.
They should focus of what the people want, not what they want or think we
want.
They should just give up, let Linux take over, we all know we love Linux :)
They should make it use less than 20MB for visual effects, like Linux :D
They should create an entirely new operating system, voice, camera, and
gesture based, where users must interact physically with the computer to do
tasks, using their voices, and bodily gestures.


Honestly, I think Microsoft should just offer tones more support, the
support they give people, is crap, complete and utter crap, it's useless.

Ever thought, that if Microsoft didn't invent the Blue screen fo death that
maybe it wouldn't happen...

Just my opinion, and I'm using Vista HP SP1.
You can't fix this. It should have never been released. It's only purposein
being released was $$$$$ for M$ and hang the public.

To switch to Vista, I'd have had to scrap the motherboard, the $400.00 video
card, all the ram. The list goes on, but the biggest expense was the hardware
it made obsolete. The software was a complete different story. NONE of it
worked. A complete rework of that CASE wasn't logical or economically
practical. Because the case was the only thing Vista didn't make obsolete.
$20.00 case..

Why am I using Vista HP ? The XP blew up when I tried to expand to 4 gigsram.
A HP Vista HP machine with 1 gig ram, and room for plenty of drives, and 4 gigs
ram was under $500.00.

Most of the software was made obsolete. Then I found out how to turn off UAC
and get the software back to working.

The NEW vista video card is still useless. I can't upgrade my TV software
because the video card software from M$ screws up the picture and severalother
things. No fix available, so I stop trying to upgrade the video card upgrade
that isn't being fixed. This after 2 years of use. Oh well only 10 more years
b4 M$ makes this OS obsolete. But then with all this talk about fixing Vista,
could mean more $$$$$ for M$ by replacing the VISTA OS with a completely new OS
long before the 12 year death sentence they applied to XP.
I mean really, how long can a company survive by selling 1 product every 12
years.
