The HP Recovery Manager will not reinstall the original Update 6 version. Any clues as to what could be causing this frustrating problem? -- Whomever |

I have previously downloaded and attempted to install the off-line version, to no avail. In fact, a short while ago I ran CCleaner to get rid of temp files, etc., and then, for the third or fourth time, tried to install the off-line version of Java. The installer, as has been the case since around 0500 yesterday, hung at "Extracting Installer." I have now attempted to install Java at least a dozen times, in various ways, and every single time, I get the "Extracting Installer" message showing in the Java installer (both on- and off-line version), even when I leave the installer running for well over thirty minutes. -- Whomever |

I am on a 32-bit computer, so which version of the MS Installer do I want? There seem to be both x86 and x64 versions that apply to Vista; I'd guess the x86 one to be correct, but I'm tired of guessing games. 2. I ran the CCleaner Registry analyzer, which found two references to Java, both "Installer Reference Issue", both of which were found in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Folders. The first refers to Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06, the other ending in \bin. Is there any possibilty that those two entries could be at least part of the problem? (Incidentally, I tried to install a downloaded version of Upate 6, which (of course...) stuck on "Extracting Installer." -- Whomever |

When you're the only legal supplier of a product you can afford to be indifferent, just look at MS. |

I don't see that message. Are you sure of the wording? I downloaded jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-s.exe (15.2 M/B) and installed it on Vista Ultimate 32bit. The first box that appears is headed 'Windows Installer' with the message ' Preparing to install' inside the box with a green progress bar. Then the Java box appears with the Google toolbar option, then the 'Thank you' box at the end of the installation. I never see the words ' Extracting Installer' ?? |

No IE window opened, although I have tried an on-line install with IE7--to no avail, of course. Yes, I have tried installing Update 6, both on- and off-line, as well as using HP's built-in Recovery Manager, which tries to reinstall Update 6 (the version that came with the computer); no luck, anywhere. I got a phone call yesterday from one of the HP technical support people who had been trying (and trying very hard, at that) to help me solve the problem. He asked if I had had any success; when I said "no," he asked a few questions, then said he would do some research and call me back within an hour. That he did not call again indicates to me that the problem is truly an odd one that is not easily figured out. At this time, I can only hope that either someone on-line comes up with the `magic' needed to solve this, or that a second-tier technical support person at HP is able to figure out what is causing the difficulty, or is able to get either or both MS and Sun to do so. -- Whomever |

I then have a list of registry changes, file alterations, additions and deletions. I have no record of zipper.exe being used during the install. I have also searched with Agent Ransack and there is no zipper.exe anywhere on my machine. It seems that we are talking about two totally different installations. I am talking about double-clicking jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-s.exe on a Vista Ultimate 32 bit Desktop. Also you mention something about HP Recovery service, what is that ? Is it possible that this HP software is interfering with the installation. ? |

So I wonder if this guy's got the right installer? |
