| Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? Can someone confirm (or deny) this please. I have read a post on another forum that claims if you have a legal copy of Vista you can downgrade to XP and use the Vista key. If this is possible will it apply to an embedded OS and will it be like for like ie vista pro for XP pro?? Thanks in advance. :o) |

| Re: Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? If you have either Vista Business or Ultimate edition, follow this procedure: How to downgrade: Install a copy of Windows XP Professional with the product key that came with that copy, and then when you come to the activation screen -- which is near the end of the installation process -- select the "activate by phone" option rather than the online method. You'll likely end up talking with a live rep; tell him that you're downgrading from Vista to XP, and give him the Vista product key. The rep will walk you through the rest of the procedure. Note: Windows Vista Home Premium and Vista Basic are not eligible for downgrade rights. | Re: Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? Thanks Carey. Unfortunately its home premium, embedded. I just wanted to check before I payed out Would you leave the vista on the partition and install XP or get rid of it completely? I suppose I'm asking whether it will intefere with the running of XP? I've read a few dual boot issues and wouldnt be using it. While I have you here so to speak can you tell me where vistas updates are stored? I have hidden files set to view and operating system files also but cant find the wretched things via dos. I'd assumed its under AdvancedInstallers/appwiz.cpl but cant see it. Thanks again. | Re: Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? Yes, you can dual boot XP with Vista. Create a partition for XP. I haven't done it because I'm satisfied with Vista and all of my XP applications and programs run fine on Vista. To view Vista updates: Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Windows update\View update history -- oscar :) ....Right click is your best friend... You can use Virtual PC 2007 to create the virtual computer and then use the XP cd to install XP. You can install and run applications just like in XP on a physical computer. There are few limitations. Although you will see that VPC is not "supported" on Vista Home Premium, that does NOT mean it doesn't run. It runs very well. It just isn't eligible for phone and email support from MS unless you are using Vista Business or Ultimate. There is a group of VPC users at microsoft.public.virtualpc. VPC 2007 SP1 is a free MS program and is at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en |

You have to have an OEM or Volume License for Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, and you can only downgrade to WinXP Pro, I believe. The Vista Home versions have no downgrade rights. > and use the Vista key. > No, that's completely false. You have to have a valid retail WinXP Pro CD and Product Key. | Re: Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? If you are downgrading to XP from Vista you are no longer licensed to use that Vista install - since you have chosen to downgrade to an XP license. (Of course at a later date you can go back up) - but you are not licensed to run both on the same machine, so your Vista install that you intend to leave is no longer legally licensed for your use - as you have downgraded the license to an XP one. You can try (and others will advise you to play semantic game with the license saying you are downgrading then upgrading then downgrading again as you switch between your dual boot system - however the license is required at install time. So you install XP under your downgrade rights then the original Vista install is no longer licensed. If you subsequently reinstall Vista and leave XP on there then that XP is no longer a properly licensed install as the Vista install has used the license which is now regraded back to a Vista one - so you have no license for the XP install. Sorry if this seems confusing but if you have only one license - you are licensed to install the OS that that license is graded as (Vista or downgrade to XP) only and not both. So if your system has Vista currently installed and you wish to install a copy of XP using that Vista license downgraded to XP then you must remove the Vista install. -- Mike Brannigan "Spikey" <hedge_hogg@NOSPAMbtinternet.com> wrote in message news:MZqdnYmqNa18zOvVnZ2dnUVZ8qPinZ2d@posted.plusn et... > Thanks Carey. > > Unfortunately its home premium, embedded. Uh, whats the point of that if you have to install XP to do it anyway? May as well keep the copy of Vista, format the HDD and install their copy of XP. What if a person doesn't have a copy of XP Pro and wants to downgrade Vista to XP? |

| Re: Downgrading vista to xp can I use the vista key?? Hi Carey, Sorry didnt reply straightaway. Headache stopped play. Several reasons really, although I think my dislike is partly from the home/pro issue and also the embedded versions of any OS have always proved to be problematic IMO. I like several of the diagnostic features of vista but had fixed XP pro just how i liked it. I cant justify the outlay to go up to vista pro whereas xp pro is cheap. I'm maintaining 3 pcs, 1 xp pro, 1xp home and the vista home premium and to be honest I'm struggling getting the old brain to swap between them. I also have an A3 printer which doesnt function fully under vista. Office 2k is glitchy which is probably to be expected but again I cant really justify a newer version. Also seems quite slow compared to the old PC which is a third of the processor speed and memory.
