Logon UI.exe and authui.dll problem

HELP! I am not incredibly talented in such problems but would love
someone to help me through this. I was having problems with my half a
year old Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop for the last few days. First it
looked like I lost my Symantec Virus Protector and than I would get the
Blue Screen of Death after a while every time I booted up. The last
straw came when I turned on my computer and it would, after the bottom
startup bars went a few times, to a black screen where I got an error
message stating :

Logon UI.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\system 32\authui.dll
Not designed to run on windows or error (reinstall prgram again)

Or something to that effect.

After which, I have a black screen and cursor and nothing else. I tried
to start in Safe Mode but same thing.

Please could really use some help as I am currently consulting in
Central Asia and really need my computer!

Best,

Linotsi

I should add I am using Vista Home I think and the message included Bad
Image in the Logon UI.exe line.

If this has been covered elsewhere please let me know I am a newbie at
the ask help thing!

Best,

RE: Logon UI.exe and authui.dll problem

Hey pal I feel your pain. I have had similar problems with windows xp in the
past. If you have a floppy drive you can go to windows knowledge base and
search for start up on floppy disk. you will need 6- 3.5 1.44mb floppy
disks. you must format each disk by inserting it into your drive and then
right click. select format. At the bottom of the window that appears you will
see a choice for MS DOS start up. click on this option and then click start
format. do this for all 6 disks. Hang on a sec, let me see if I can find the
address for
you.{http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=download+set+up+boot+disks+for+Vista&qsc0=0&SearchBtn0=Search&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99}
Past this address into your browser and you may find some help there. I'm
assuming that your using Vista simply because this is a Vista forum so the
web address I pasted(be sure to leave the brackets out when you paste. The
set up and boot discs brought back my machine I hope they will work for you.
When you are done loading all 6 disks you will have some choices. you can
hope the problem has been repaired, you can go into camand prompt, this one
can be tough or you can repair. for repair you will need an original
installation disk. If your install was oem then you had the option of burning
a recovery disk from a partition on your hard drive. If you do go into camand
prompt be aware that you can cause damage so be sure of what you are doing.
Good luck

Yeah, I don't have floppy, new computer. I am busy having our technical
team here download a boot CD for Vista or something like that. Do I go
to F12 to boot from this CD or what do I do? Otherwise I cannot even see
how to start!

Best and thanks,

Linotsi

Re: Logon UI.exe and authui.dll problem

+Ya I don't have a floppy any more either. on the subject of reboot, if you
can open your cd drive while your machine is powered up simply insert the cd
and close the drive. Manually if you have to. shut your machine off ( from
the sound of things that shouldn't be a problem). With the cd in the drive
power up your machine and the disc should auto run, once it begins it should
open a blue window ( not the screen of death ). I've never had to boot Vista
so I'm not sure exactly what you will see but in my experience although
limited it may be. Vista isn't all that different from XP just more graphics
and toys. So you should be prompted as to what to do, most of your
restoration should be automatic. Good luck. Do me a favor and let me know
what happens. you never know I may need the info. you can hit me at

Re: Logon UI.exe and authui.dll problem

Thanks brother,

I see that the solution revolves around downloading as a bittorrent, I
do alot of this, but the company I am working for does not allow through
its admin system. I will try it when I get home. One more question, I am
pretty sure I have 32 Bit, will 64 work?

Best,

Linotsi

Re: Logon UI.exe and authui.dll problem

I will let you know next week when I get back home. I plan to use the
ultimate boot diskd I have downloaded in the past (Hirens, etc.) as my
internet is slow in my part of the world and most this stuff comes from
bittorrent which I can only access with faster speed.

Best,

Linotsi
