| Re: Vista Home Will Not Start Using the installation media, try doing an `in-place upgrade`. | Re: Vista Home Will Not Start When you say "hear the hd grind" is this a different noise than normal? You may have a defective hard drive. -- Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience: Systems Administration http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "Yeller" <Yeller@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C2548FCE-24A5-4D06-922A-3B3266005BD6@microsoft.com... > F11 system restore. | Re: Vista Home Will Not Start That grinding noise from the hard drive is very bad news. You may not be able to get Windows running from it. You need to have the hard drive checked. If you bought the computer recently, contact the seller for instructions. With only what you have said I suspect you need to have the hard drive replaced. I take it that Vista came preinstalled on your computer so the seller needs to help you get Vista reinstalled using the new hard drive if indeed it is bad. | Re: Vista Home Will Not Start An in-place-upgrade needs to be run from within the running Vista. Apparently that is not possible. Also, he may not have the media. His reference to an F11 key means that he needs to access a recovery partition and that means that Vista came preinstalled. | Re: Vista Home Will Not Start F11 would not mean a system restore, but most likely a restoration to factory condition.
