Try it out.
You'll either like it, or not.

I still hate that the Title bars/Window borders disappear when I move
the mouse over the Min/Max/Close buttons.

Stinking compiz !

You do realize Ubuntu is based on Debian right? Just wondering since
you're calling one apple good and the other apple bad even though they
both came off the same tree. I personally don't think Gnome is more for
the power user, it's just very different from what someone will be used
to coming from Windows.

I personally find KDE far too cluttered but I suppose I can see it's
appeal to a windows user in being windows-like.

You depend upon detection software to tell you what is happening, and
you lean on it like a crutch and a security blanket. If the O/S can be
fooled, then anything that runs with the O/S can be fooled too.

It's your machine. And it's no one else's machine but yours. You don't
know what is happening on your own machine? You go to p2p(s) and
download load stuff while you toss security and safe hex out the door.
There is no telling what is on your machine that's undetected that can
cause trouble.

He's got a point though Mike. The original poster did in no way indicate
even the remotest hint of any P2P downloads. So considering all the
legality issues associated around P2P, it is a bit rude and arrogant to
assume that it is the cause of his problems.

A simple "If" placed correctly in your statement would do wonders for it
and change it from an arrogant assumption to a helpful suggestion.

Stephan

There was no mention of using a legal music download source either..

The op claims crashes etc and downloading form P2P sites is a good way to
incite that

It was no arrogant assumption, purely a statement of fact which may or may
not answer as to why the crashes occur.

If people want specific answers, they should be more specific in what they
ask..

Maybe you should be more considerate of people asking for help and not
jump to conclusions or be defensive. I expected more from a MVP. It
seems you have a thing for P2P sites. I never use them, yet you
immediately jumped to that conclusion. As far as being specific maybe
that would be a good suggestion on how you should frame your replies
being a MVP and all rather than your shotgun response which totally
missed the mark.

It appears some here are more interested in furthering their agenda
than actually trying to help. I have already said in a reply to
someone else the crash most annoying to me is Windows Explorer and my
downloading of music was with Urge.

For somebody using Need to Know you don't seem to know much. I have
already stated twice I do not go to any p2p sites. Yet you are the
second responder to suggest that as the source of my problem. Yes it
is my machine. I had a question and came to what is suppose to be a
support group for help. If you can't provide any help and only attempt
to point blame at me why did you respond?

I've seen no statement of fact from you yet. I do see you trying to
make weak attempts at defending your original response to me which
others have already noted was arrogant and uncalled for.

I'm really disappointed if you are actually a MVP if you now resort to
fibbing. You did not use either 'many' or 'all' in your original reply
to me. What you said verbatim appears below.

"Downloading music via P2P is a surefire way to pick up crap that will
slow your machine up and cause it to crash.."

If some MVP is this deliberately dishonest is there a mechanism for
seeing this individual gets the remedial retraining he needs?

I read what was being posted at that point, not the entire thread. It's
a waste of time. You made no claim that you were not accessing a p2p.
What you have implied is that the person sucked that was trying to give
you help. There are no gods in this or any other NG. I read your other
post. No one is sitting at that machine but you.

And downloading music does kind of imply p2p. You never said otherwise,
until now. You ever defrag the machine. Maybe it's trashing itself to
death because it can't find continuous open space.

Re: I'm having trouble with Vista

Where are you copying files to/from? Some Vista file operations are quicker
than XP, some are slower. Knowing exactly what you're doing will help
diagnose the cause of the slowness.

Are there any errors in the event logs related to the crashes? Open the
Performance and Reliability Monitor. Click on Reliability Monitor. Click on
the red X's to see the errors.

As far as Ubuntu being more reliable than Vista I'd say they are about
equal. Assuming no physical hardware problems both depend on the reliability
of the drivers for your particular hardware. I run both on several different
computers. I currently have no reliability issues with either. I have had
reliability issues with both when buggy drivers were in use. I do still have
some programs on both that are problematical. With both OS's I can lock them
up solid just by running an incompatible program.
