Recently had the same problem. After I ran a few anti-spyware programs to remove
a trojan, my Internet Explorer would only work if I ran it as Administrator.
Then the "Unknown Publisher" popup would appear. All the advice I've seen regarding
how to fix this is mostly crap. Changing security permissions, registry entries...
etc.

LOL. After 6 hours of research and testing, I found it was actually quite easy
to fix. The problem is in the shortcut icon you use to fire it up. One of the
anti-spyware programs must've changed the 'Start in' property. Just change
the entry back to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" and all is fixed. Even
better, delete the shortcut and use Windows Explorer to go to C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe, right-click and create a new shortcut.

I wouldn't waste my time with this lame duck IE7 because there are better
browsers around like FF3 or Opera,they are fast,efficient and have good
looks. IE7 works very poorly even with IE7Pro addon.

It is still needed for Windows Update...

I prefer IE7. I've tried Firefox, Opera and Safari. I don't like any of
them. I don't have any problems with IE.
