delays in selecting multiple items

Good Morning,

When I try to highlight a series of items such as emails in my Inbox so that
I can delete multiple unwanted items, I typically selected the CTRL button
and then multiple left mouse clicks to do the highlighting. In Vista (SP1),
highlighting sometimes experiences long delays between clicks and can
sometimes drop previously highlighted items. This same behavior occurs in
other applications (e.g. Excel), not just email.

I have a known working mouse that I am using. This also occurs if I use the
laptop's touchpad. It happens offline as well as when I am connected
(directly or wirelessly) online.

Thank you in advance.
