Recording Stereo through Microphone Input without audio enhancemen

I have an HP laptop with vista on it. I also have Cooledit Pro 2.0 as my
recording software. In the past, my computers (all on XP, I go this laptop
for college) had no problem with me plugging my guitar into the microphone
input and recording, but with Vista, the audio enhancement will change the
volume of my input while I'm playing.

I found one way to counter this was to un-check "audio enhancement" but if I
do, it only records in mono, which is not what I want at all.

Please help!

I have exactly the same problem. Would be great to find a way to disable
the internal mic and still be able to record with the guitar directly
plugged into the mic plug but it just stops recognizing any sound after
you disable the mic.

Use another audio interface. These are not expensive and will give better
results than the mic port. For examples, check out M-Audio's line.
