hi, whenever i go on a file and go under "send file to" by the right click of
the mouse it freezes and then the whole desktop goes under not responding?
are there any fixes for this?

It is probably due to something inside the 'Send To' menu that
shouldn't be there, or that points to something invalid that causes
the crash.

It might be as simple as viewing things in the Send To folder located
at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo (or Type shell:sendto into the
address bar -same thing in Explorer)

Or, you might want to do the hide drives registry modification in the
article or the remove the CD burning item.

thanks but it didnt work :S also when i go to extract files from winrar it
freezes when i try to open the C drive folder and i think it does it too all
the other folders as well as if i cant open them?

Uh, oh that's not good. So, Explorer crashes and restarts, or does the
entire system crash or just freeze up?

If Explorer crashes, it normally freezes up everything until it
restarts. You would see it close, the task bar would disappear for a
few moments, then flash and come back with your other programs.

Are there any other symptoms? Blue screen? Memory dump? Error
messages?

It seems like the problem is broader than just the right-click, Send
to. Do any other apps crash in addition to WinRAR when accessing the C
drive?

There are a lot of diagnostics that you could do to find the culprit,
but simple stuff first:
o- When did it first start happening?
o- What changed?
o- How do you go back?

It might be time to try a System Restore that's the simplest thing to
do.

Is it only related to Explorer, or does IE crash too? It could be an
IE add-on misbehaving.

You could run Start, key in 'Reliability and Perfromance Monitor' and
choose Reliability Monitor in the left-hand pane. You will see the
'System Stability Chart' displayed. By choosing or clicking on a day
you can review a history of various failures and possibly even track
them back day-by-day until you find where the problem began and
possibly any software installs before the problem started.

It's a bit much, I realize, but I'll stick with you as long as you're
interested. We're just looking to find what changed and possibly what
to do about it.

well i played around a little bit and found a different way of opening my c
drive and now it works fine. but still with the send to and open with tabs
they still make the system freeze as the desktop becomes nono responding. i
tried the website you gave me and that hasnt seem to done aything :\

I keep coming back to this thread and puzzling about it and yet, I
still don't have any other ideas for simple fixes.

Your symptoms - computer crashes or hangs on right-click, send to or
right-click, open with

You've tried the steps I posted in this thread for troubleshooting
'send to' without success.

If you start your computer in "safe mode" does the problem persist?

I guess that what I would do is aggressively begin disabling all
unnecessary startup items and then test one at a time enabling them
looking for something that interferes.

You could also run Start, 'Event Viewer' (or eventvwr.exe) following
recovery after an incident and look through the administrative events
leading up to the hang for clues.

[Shakes head] There really should be a send to or program association
to something that is offline or otherwise out of bounds. Yet, that
little exercise with the 'send to' should find that, so that ain't
right. I wish I could be more help. Maybe someone else will toss in
some ideas?
