Problem with Vista accessing XP Pro printer share.

I have a Windows Vista SP1 system trying to access a printer share on a XP
Pro SP3 system. The admin accounts on Vista are able to get to the printer
share with no problems. However, the User accounts are having problems with
accessing the printer share. I had read an article on using a local port
for accessing the share instead of using network share printer access. When
the User accounts try to print, a print error is displayed on the job list
and the print does not occur.

I have opened up the printer share on the XP box to include everyone and
guests to have full access and I still have the problem.

Does anyone have any info on how to fix this problem? Is it a problem with
XP or Vista?

Ken,

I don't have a specific solution to your problem... would ask, though, if
the Vista user acct's can access other share types on the XP box?

I had a problem with Vista accessing a shared printer on an XP Home box...
just would not work. Tried this, tried that, to no avail. Put that problem
to the side for a couple of months. One day, thought, hey, let's just see...
and it worked. Was it Vista updates or XP updates that fixed the problem? No
clue.

Did the Vista box ever successfully access the printer share on the XP box,
i.e., prior to Vista SP1 or XP SP3?

Hi,
I had a simular problem to a ME-PC where my printer is connected.
I was only solved by assigning a new port (even after a re-installation i
had to do it again).
That was prior to SP1.
Reason no idea!!!
Succes

Yes, I was able to get it working prior to installing Xp SP3. Now only
administrator and power user accounts seem to have success printing, but not
user accounts. They can see the printer, but get an error everytime they
try to print. I am at my wits end trying to fix this.

Re: Problem with Vista accessing XP Pro printer share.

I had a similar problem but don't know if it will help in your case. I
found the following doing a Google search, try it on your Vista machine:

"I had the same problem. I found a solution. Logically it makes no sense to
me, but it worked so...

Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

ChooseAdd a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the
drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the
computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is ba\\sement and the
printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty."
