| Windows Easy Transfer Isn't I'm attempting to move files and folders from an old laptop (XP SP2), to a new one (Vista Home Premium) with Windows Easy Transfer using a router. The program successfully installed on both computers, but when I select "All personal files (recommended)" on my old computer I get an error message: "There was an error scanning the data on your system. Windows Easy Transfer will now be cancelled." What should I try next? |

| RE: Help please re Windows Easy Transfer Below is how to Network XP and vista, then copy and your files. OR, burn files to CD, or copy them to a Flash Drive, and put them on vista!!!!! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed) 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer. Also, If you haven’t done so already, run XP’s Network Setup Wizard (in Start >All Programs >Accessories >Communications), and tell the Wizard to enable File and Printer Sharing. Or > Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a Home or Small Office Network. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "W Cubed" wrote: > On May 16, 12:38 pm, W Cubed <wwaad...@aol.com> wrote: > > I'm attempting to move files and folders from an old laptop (XP SP2), > > to a new one (Vista Home Premium) with Windows Easy Transfer using a > > router. | RE: Help please re Windows Easy Transfer W Cubed, I had spent a couple hours trying to establish a functional home networking scheme but after several failures I made the decision that I didn't have the time to figure out why it wasn't working. Plus, much of the time only one or two home computers are ever on at the same time. As stated by other posters, the easiest and fastest way to transfer files and documents from one home computer to another is using an external portable drive or USB flash memory stick. I transfer files among my three home computers every day using flash stick memory or a portable disc drive. It's quick, easy and very secure. But transfering IE bookmarks from my XP to Vista I had used Vista's transfer program. It took me about three tries but I did it. oscar "Mick Murphy" wrote: > Below is how to Network XP and vista, then copy and your files. > > OR, burn files to CD, or copy them to a Flash Drive, and put them on > vista!!!!! > > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx > > Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. > > Permissions/Share info is there as well. > > If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer > sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed) > > 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is > the SAME. > > In Vista Network and Sharing: > > Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) > > Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) > > File Sharing: ON > > Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared > Docs) > > Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and > passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). | Re: Windows Easy Transfer Isn't That defeats the intent of the Easy Transfer Wizard. While I do it that way, MS intended for less capable users to use the easy transfer wizard. You should be able to run the wizard on the old machine (not through the network), then copy just the easy transfer file through the network to the new machine. I do not believe it is possible to scan the old computer from the new computer using the Easy Transfer Wizard. Scan the old computer locally, then run the wizard on the new computer. When it asks for a source file, tell it where you copied it to. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928634/en-us -- A Professional Amateur...If anyone knew it all, none of would be here!
