Hello all,

I decided to make the most of my MSDN subscription and give Vista a go,
since my XP installation was very slow. I wiped the drive clean and installed
Vista Ultimate SP1 - with an open mind and high hopes.

It took a while to install, but time aside it was rather painless. However,
my experience started to go downhill quickly. As a first step, I opened up IE
and went straight to AVG's website to get some Antivirus protection. IE
crashed. Ok, so I tried a few other websites. IE crashed rather often, in
fact it's not random it'll crash on the same websites every time. So I
managed to get Firefox installed without having IE crash - and tried to do
all my updating through Firefox (not much choice).

My second bad experience was when I tried to install MSN Messanger. First
off, the online downloader/installer didn't work. Says it couldn't install
and to try again later. So I opted for the standalone installer (took a while
to find) and tried it. It installed, but unfortunately it constantly crashes
with various exceptions, seems to be related to the rotating ads but can't be
sure. I have even tried to install Flash & Java and still no luck with the
wierd exceptions. I also made sure I updated my video drivers to the latest
ATI drivers available.

Performance is ok, and I do like the interface, but IE7 is virtually
unusable and so is Messenger. I am running a Dell P4 3.0Ghz HT, with an ATI
Radeon 9800XT 128MB, 2GB of ram. Of course, this is a fresh install and I'm
not sure what could be causing these problems. I had no problems with XP at
all, I'm thinking either hardware incompatability or I need to update a
driver somewhere. So far I've had a rather unpleasant initial experience, but
hoping to stick it out and see if it can be solved. Suggestions?

It is my opinion that unless you are getting new hardware, with a minimum
2Ghz dual core CPU/2GB RAM/256MB Video that you won't be happy with Vista.
I have tried it on several different machines and haven't been happy with
any of them.
I even got 2 machines with Vista factory installed that exceed the above
criteria and still think it sucks.
I found XP drivers and converted one to XP and the other dual boots with XP.
I only boot to Vista when I in a masochistic mood...

Did you run the Vista upgrade advisor before installing?

I did - but I was only interested in running Home Basic. It said my
machine would be fine, except that I would have to get rid of Nero OEM
and my scanner. It was "iffy" about my sound card (mobo onboard) but
that's working fine too.

Turns out my scanner also works fine, because the manufacturer came up
with Vista drivers recently.

Your rants are funny not painful, they don't cause any pain besides the
sides hurting from laughing...
But I do support a couple hundred XP machines and do computer repair on the
side.
I learn all new Windows releases because I have to support it, like it or
not.
I can make Vista work, I just don't like the way it works.
I'm glad YOU like it, that doesn't make someone with a different opinion any
less intelligent.
It's no different than if you like plaid and I like stripes.

Run Windows Update and install any hardware drivers are offered. Also try
the Dell web site where you can easily find drivers (and possibly a BIOS
update) for your computer by entering the tag number. I'm running Vista SP1
on a computer that originally came with XP with similar specs - it runs fine
so your problem is not a lack of power. The only upgrade I'd suggest is
another gig of ram after you get the system running reliably.

Also the Messenger crash has the following message:

Duplicate Memory Free operation. Get a stack trace and report bug against
the calling app (not against OLE Automation). File
d:\rtm\com\oleaut32\typelib\oautil.cpp, line 634

Pops up every once in a while and when I press Ignore/Abort/Retry Messenger
closes.

Your MSDN license does not entitle you to use MSDN licensed O/S for
anything other than _testing_ purposes.

You can't legally use them for production purposes, i.e your day-to-day
desktop.
