It is all how you look at the numbers. Microsoft claims it has around a billion Windows installs worldwide. If "only" 140 million licenses have been rendered for Vista that's roughly 10% of the install base that have upgraded and Vista has been out over a year. It is even more revealing when you look at how Microsoft cooks the numbers. It isn't raw sales, not even close, much of their Vista number is for licenses in some pre build box that HP, Dell, others HOPE to sell. I would suspect (but don't know) that the number also includes boxes not yet sold. Then we have the question of how many people actually replace the preinstalled Vista with something else. A real test would be the number of copies of Vista that have been activated. That Microsoft won't tell and I'll wager it at best is a fraction of that tossed around 140 million number. |

We do know this, the XP sales were unexpectedly up by 50% or something. That means a lot of people are paying the double dip to get rid of Vista. |

If this is how you feel about 'number cooking', or 'cooking numbers' I stress that you keep away from looking into the practices of the U.S Federal Reserve, major and minor banks, the dynamics of the stock markets regarding share, foreign exchange, bond, etc pricing. You will really lose your nerve if that's how MS made you feel over 'number cooking', but you don't know what is either. Back to the subject of this thread being, 'How to keep making money while making CRAP products?' Look into; - McDonalds - KFC - Burger King - Chrysler - Socks made in China If you want a more idealistic view like, 'Not making money from bad products', look into; - RedHat Linux (for the desktop). Speaking of which, this Vista catastrophic blunder MS done to itself, who was there to fill the vacuum with a good product, any Linux, Apple takers? No. I do know the answer to that question, but it's really nothing to worry over. - GorkusPuss |

That is why MSFT is rushing Win7. They know if Linux ever gets any momentum that Gates and Ballmer cash cows would be in serious trouble. Linux isn't going to roll over MSFT for just Vista, it will be more like death from a million tiny cuts. Something like what MSFT did to NOVL, what goes around comes around. |
