Windows Live OneCare

I uninstalled (using the removal tool) Norton and installed OneCare on a
trial basis. Do I need any additional spyware with this? Spybot, for
example. OneCare sounds like it does it all but I want to be sure and would
appreciate your opinions.

Re: Windows Live OneCare

You should get One Care's removal tool and remove that too.

Windows OneCare includes its own advanced version
of Windows Defender. You do not need an additional
third-party anti-spyware program.

I sincerely doubt that. Do you have any cites to support your
statement?

Yes, you'll need additional spyware protection. (Not to mention adding
a decent anti-virus application.)

I have three different computers running Windows OneCare.
In over 2 years, no system has been infected with malware,
spyware or viruses. I highly recommend using it.

AV-Comparatives does not rate One-Care very well at all. And simple
google serch for spyware app comparision will yeild results that "do
not" favor One Care one bit!

I am a MS fan boy, make no mistake about it.

But I read the reveiws and conduct my own test as well.

I do not recomend One-Care at all. And MS just sent me v2.0.

I use and recomend NOD32 for AV only, Comodo for firewall, Defender is
running(what the hell), Spybot, A-Squared free and the premium
SuperAntiSpyware.

I'm clean.

Good luck.

I have two different computers - neither of them running Windows
OneCare.

In over FIVE years, no system has been infected with malware,
spyware or viruses. I highly recommend not using it.

Absolutely bad advice. Do not turn off the OneCare firewall or your status will
go red. The OneCare firewall provides 2 way protection with a fairly simple
configuration interface.

As enjoyable as that reverse statement reads regarding your 2 computers that
have not been infected without the use of OneCare, it can't be used to support
the argument that OneCare is not good protection. :-)

OneCare is not perfect, no protection is. OneCare does a decent job of providing
protection. It is meant to be used alone and without additional 3rd party tools
for additional protection.
I recommend that you consider using a free online scanner on occasion of you
wish to validate the protection offered by OneCare.
Here are two possible choices:

If it's not perfect - which I have no argument with - then why rely
on it alone? I think it's irresponsible of someone to tell folks that
One Care is all that they need.

I use AVG antivirus and malware protection, but I also depend on a
couple other malware scanners to periodically check my system.

Because it is irresponsible to make a blanket statement about using multiple
protection products which can cause conflicts, performance issues and
potentially cause a missed infection due to conflicts...

You are absolutely welcome to run other scanners on demand, hence my suggestion
about using an online scanner to validate that all is well if desired. However,
any scanner that installs as a service or provides "real time" protection will
potentially be an issue. OneCare (as several other suites out these days) is
designed to be a full protection suite with no need to run other products.

AVG 8 does that as well... and it's free.
