This "forum" you are using is nothing more than a web-based interface
that sucks up postings from the Microsoft newsgroups, repackages them,
and presents them to you as if they were doing you a service. It's a
very poor way to access the newsgroups, not to mention that you are
supporting what many of us consider to be a dishonest way of
presenting themselves.

Most of us here use the newsgroups directly, with our newsreader,
where no registration is required. I strongly recommend that you, and
anyone else using one of those forums, do the same. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm It's
about Outlook Express, but it's almost identical in Windows Mail,
which comes with Vista.

Half right.
'It's on news.panix.com' - Correct.
'No it's not' - not correct, since, in fact, the news group is, indeed, on
msnews.microsoft.com.

Nahhhhhh.

There's no such thing as a primary location on Usenet. It's
*entirely* *distributed*.

Well, you can't use news.panix.com unless you get an account
at panix. I guess you could use that microsoft thing but I'm tellin ya
it's nothing but a *cheap* *imitation*.

Or you could get an account at painx! They're a really great ISP
and they support trn!

This is primarily a newsgroup hosted by microsoft at the news server
msnews.microsoft.com. Like almost all other newsgroups, it is also
mirrored to hundred or thousands of other news servers all over the
world (including, but certainly not limited to, news.panix.com).

You can use any news server you want that carries the newsgroup, but I
recommend msnews.microsoft.com, since that's what most of us here use,
and will therefore give you the quickest access to posted messages.

From a practical standpoint, you have two main choices: use the server
Microsoft provides, msnews.microsoft.com, or use the news server your
ISP provides (if they do; ask them). Other news servers are available,
but some of them will charge you, and some others carry fewer
newsgroups or have restrictions on what you can do. There's certainly
no reason to choose any other than Microsoft's or your ISP's, unless
you also want access to newsgroups that you can't get on one of those.

Notifying you of activity in threads in which you are participating is
not a function of the news server, it's a function of the newsgroup
client you are using.

Some newsgroup clients can do this, but others may not. I'm using
Forte Agent here. I have it set to mark threads in which I'm
participating as "watched" and I have messages sorted to display
watched threads first.

Ken is confused. He missed that you're talking about a web-based
service. That's the only way you can get email notification about
replies to what you've posted.

You cannot get anything similar by using a newsgroup client.

No, you're using a web-based forum. That's very far from a newsgroup
client. The newsgroup client that comes with Vista is called Windows
Mail.

You can't configure a newsgroup client to send you E-mail
notifications, but you can configure it to highlight messages in
threads you're involved in, and put them first in the list of threads
That's what I was recommending above.

No, not at all. I began my participation in this thread by pointing
out that that's what he was doing, and recommending that he switch to
a newsreader instead.

That's correct. However he can overcome his stated objection to using
a newsreader ("Who wants to scroll to my threads ,which will be all
over, and find out if I have replies or not ??") by following the
advice I gave.
