Dell, Lenovo to offer Windows XP beyond June 30 cutoff

"Microsoft may have decided to give XP Home (only for ultra-low-cost PC
use) to OEMs at least through June 2010, but OEMs and customers have been
warily eying Window XP's June 30, 2008, expiration date. When Ballmer
said "we can always wake up smarter" in regards to extending the life of
XP again, he may not have been expecting OEMs to take matters into their
own hands, as Dell and Lenovo are now doing by using Microsoft's
"Downgrade Rights" to keep selling PCs with Windows XP beyond June." -

Sounds like a smart move by Microsoft. Quite a few businesses don't want to
upset the apple cart by migrating over to Vista and I don't blame them.
Especially with legacy applications that they need to run.

I continue to use XP for my development and have no plans to move to Vista.

My test box is Vista so I can play with the features and see what bugs come
up so when we do migrate, it won't be such a shock.

Did you read the article? The OEMs are just stretching the line of MS's
previous downgrade-rights policy.

MS cannot really shut off sales of XP on June 30th, even if it wanted to.

Yes, I read the article. It is up to Microsoft to enforce the rules and
Microsoft is letting the OEM's continue their downgrade rights. In the end,
it's up to Microsoft.

Oh, so you just have a reading comprehension problem. I understand now!

LOL! Let's see MS try to stop it.

Microsoft owns the licences; very simple!

Actually Microsoft is the one that allowed it in the first place.

"Rights to OEM versions of systems software are granted in the OEM
License Terms. The OEM License Terms for most OEM versions of systems
software do not grant downgrade rights. The exception is the OEM
License Terms for the Windows® XP Professional operating system and
the Windows Vista™ Business and Windows Vista Ultimate operating
systems, which grant downgrade rights. See the full text of the OEM
License Terms for the specific downgrade rights. "
