System Restore: do restore points persist after a restore?

I used System Restore to undo an application install only to find that all
restore points prior to the one I undid have disappeared. All that remains
is an "Undo: Restore Operation" and nothing before that.

Is this the normal or expected behaviour? I would have thought that restore
points prior to the one undone would remain.

Re: System Restore: do restore points persist after a restore?

I agree, it does sound strange. My guess would be you need some part of that
previous registry to use the older points. The relationship there is
additive, and I suppose it possible that your current setup actually is the
source of the original problem (and that app install only triggered it)
Personally, I would be better safe than sorry, backup in prep of a fail, and
turn off restore to blank it, and kind of go from there. If something is
fragile, you don't want to depend on system restore. You need data backup.

Actually, the problem appears a little more complex. Now I can only see
restore points created today and the Undo restore point has vanished. There
is plenty of disk space available so I would not have expected such
relatively recent points to be deleted.

Are there any factors other than available disk space that control the
maintenance of restore points? Why is it only keeping "young" points?
