Windows Defender turned off

When I start up my computer, I get pop up saying Windows defender is turned
off with the red shield with the X on the bar. I try to turn it on but search
says no new definitions found. However, when I click on START button and
programs and click on Windows defender, I get green shield with checkmark in
it. Is it on or off? If off, how do I turn it on.

Re: Windows Defender turned off

Defender appears on the processes list in Task Manager. MSASCui.exe.
Open Windows Update and see if you need any defender updates.

Re: Windows Defender turned off

I clicked on Windows Update and said everything is up to date. I still get
that Windows defender is turned off (red shield) on task bar.

Re: Windows Defender turned off

Hi baltsteve,

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

Type the following command and press {ENTER}

winmgmt /salvagerepository

Restart Windows.

Re: Windows Defender turned off

Try running the command the 2nd time (after receiving the error). This helped most users.

If that does not help, post the error message.
