USB not recognizing device

Ok so I read all the other threads about this and mine seems to be an
exception. I plug a device into any USB port on my computer and I get
the message:
"USB Device Not Recognized"
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned,
and Windows does not recognize it."

My computer is an acer Aspire 3050
I have delelted infcache.inf. I also reinstalled all the ports. I have
updated everything. This happens with every device i plug into it. I
have 2 mouses both compatible with vista. Also and iPod and my printer.
One of the mice and the iPod both worked before. I went and bought a new
mouse because I thought that was the problem but after installing and
further experiments I figured out that all 3 USB ports are not
recognizing any devices plugged into them. Can anyone help me out with
this?

Re: USB not recognizing device

I did system restore back to 3 days ago. Still nothing. I reupdated
everything, all drivers are up to date.

Re: USB not recognizing device

I had a similar thing happen on an Aspire 5050 this week. After
attempting all known software and driver fixes I found that the hardware
(all three USB ports) had in fact failed!

An easy way to test this is to either use a USB diskette device to
attempt to boot the machine or, if you don't have one of them, use a
Vista DVD to boot to the point where repair or install can attempt to
"Load drivers" and see if you have access to the USB device.
If you don't have a Vista DVD, you could download the lates Ubuntu CD
image, burn it and perform a similar test.

I'm so used to software failures that I completely forgot about
performing the basic hardware test first.
