Something strange happened early this morning, 03/11/2008, at
approximately 01:30. I was notified that updates were available. These
update offerings disappeared five minutes later and haven't been seen since.
I did not write down the KB numbers as I didn't expect them to disappear.
The updates offered to me, through Windows Update, were one for
non-Gregorian calendar use, SP1 for Vista and five dealing with Live. The
Live updates were for Live toolbar, Live Messenger, Live Writer and two
others. I forget the two other Live updates.
I have Windows Update set to notify me before downloading or installing
any updates. Anyway, before they disappeared I decided to hide the update
for SP1, KB936330, which had a "Published" date of 02/20/2008, because I
wasn't sure it was the correct SP1 update as I knew it hadn't been released
to the public yet. Actually, I didn't install any of them because I assumed
they would still be there when I got out of bed, at which time I was going
to install all of them except SP1.
I had previously installed SP1 RC Refresh 2 but it disappeared when I
had to reformat and do a clean install on 02/26/2008 in order to find the
causative factor preventing my Microsoft fingerprint reader from working.
Therefore, I didn't know if this was another offering of Refresh 2 or if it
was the actual SP1 RTM. I'm not going to install it until I know what it is.
Now, my problem is this. Having hidden the update for SP1 it is still
on my system. It didn't remove itself along with the others because it was
hidden. I want to remove it but to the best of my knowledge there is no way
to do this unless I first install it and then remove it. I thought about
removing the two prerequisite updates, KB937287 and KB938371, in order to
force the removal of the KB936330 offering but that is not possible because
the two prerequisite updates cannot be removed.
The only solution I can think of is to either install the offered SP1
and check the version and build numbers or reformat and reinstall the OS,
which is no big deal. Of course, I could simply use one of my Acronis images
to restore it also. It usually only takes thirty minutes to do a reformat
and clean install of my Vista Ultimate 32bit before I reach the first
desktop, at which time I am offered the abundance of additional updates, or
twenty minutes to do an Acronis restore. Does anyone know the version and
build numbers of the final SP1 release? If so, I would appreciate it very
much if someone would let me know before I install the SP1 so that I can
uninstall it if it is the wrong version and build. Of course, this could
create another issue. If the SP1 I was offered is indeed the Refresh 2
version and I leave it on my system will I still be offered the SP1 RTM when
it is released or will I have to remove the Refresh 2 version first in order
to be offered the RTM?

Mr. Dyer,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I don't have any SP1 Betas
installed on this machine. I did a reformat and clean install on 02/26/2008.

So, it is now hidden. It has NOT been downloaded if your previous
statement is accurate. The published date is correct for SP1. It is
being released this month via Automatic Updates according to the
hardware of the systems.

Mr. Green,

Yes, you are correct. I have not downloaded the updates as of yet.
However, I have always had the ability to hide an update until I decided if
and when I wanted to download and install it. If I choose at a later date to
download and install it I simply show the hidden update and watch my network
meter as the software downloads to my system prior to the installation. As
you can see by the screenshot I provided for Mr. Dyer, the update is indeed
hidden. If this is not supposed to be the way Windows Updates works then it
is a problem with Windows Update, not me.
I have just now restored the hidden SP1 update, taken two screenshots
of the available update offered to me at this very minute and as you can
see, upon restoring the hidden SP1 update offered to me earlier this morning
I am offered this update, and only this update, again. I have not been
offered any of the other updates in the queue. Closing and reopening Windows
Update does not change anything. Rebooting does not change anything. Why am
I being offered this SP1 update that is apparently in queue and not the
others?

I understand your statement about the download queue. However, this is
not the way it was delivered to me. I received the updates offering first,
and then the updates went into the queue. Again, if this is a problem with
the Windows Update software there is nothing I can do about it.

I am not trying to start an argument with you. I fully acknowledge that
you know much, much more about this than I do. Comparing my knowledge to
yours is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Lamborghini. I admit this. I am
only trying to determine the version and build number of the final SP1 RTM
release so that if I go ahead and download and install this update I know
whether or not it is the final release. I have no idea why I was offered
this update when other people were not.
If I have a pre-RTM SP1 on my system will I still be offered the SP1
RTM? Reformatting and doing a clean install is not a problem for me as I
don't work in the winter months and I have all the time in the world to play
around with my computers. If I install this SP1 release and it is the
correct version and build I will leave my system alone. However, if I find
that it is not the final release after I have installed it then I will do a
clean install if I'm not going to be offered the final release. If in fact
this is a pre-RTM release and I will still be offered the RTM then I will
still leave it on my system for now and then uninstall it prior to
installing the RTM.
After typing %windir% and go into the Windows folder I do not find
anything labeled WindowsUpdate.log. The only entry I can find is labeled
WindowsUpdate and is a text document. I have taken screenshots of the text
log if indeed it is what you are referring to. I will provide them for you
if you want to view them.
I hope I have not confused you. I do appreciate your reply and your
assistance and I do respect your knowledge and desire to help others.

My apologies, I did not read your somewhat rambling post correctly.

Proceed to install whatever SP1 Prerequisite updates currently being offered
to the machine and reboot. You should then see other SP1 Prerequiste
Updates offered.

In My Opinion, It's A Good Thing That Microsoft Pulled The Update, Because
Windows Vista Service Pack One is Not Yet Ready 4 Prime Time, And Needs 2 Be
Sent Back 2 The Drawing Board, Just FYI.

From what I've seen of Vista on my laptop, when you get a particular update, that's the
only update offered until you have installed and rebooted. You don't see any other updates
that you have ignored only the one update. Then it goes back to normal after you've
installed the update and rebooted. I also wondered what happed to the other updates at one
stage but all returned to normal.

I can't explain why. Perhaps you need that particular update before you're offered any
other updates.

That is the log. If file extensions are not being shown then you can use
Folder Options to reveal the extensions. And yes, it is a text document
but it's extension is .log

From looking at the images you posted, it appears that the download of
SP1 was approved after it was UNhidden, downloaded, and then is awaiting
installation Approval.
IF you have NOT approved it's download then something is amiss, C.B.

Frankly, I do not know. If the answer is Yes, then you must first

I've not been able to locate what the proper build number is for the
Final Release of SP1. Can only offer up what I've heard in that it is
the same as the final RC that beta testers were offered.

Mr. Dyer,

I didn't realize I was rambling. I try to provide all the pertinent
information in my first post so that there is no need to ask for more
information. Must be a bad habit of mine. My wife has always said I have a
big mouth so it must be true. I'll try to do better next time.
Anyway, all the prerequisites are already on my system and cannot be
deleted. They were installed via Windows Update when I reformatted and did a
clean install trying to overcome my fingerprint reader problem. KB935509,
KB937287 and KB938371 cannot be uninstalled. My intent was to uninstall the
prerequisites in order to force the removal of my hidden SP1 update.
It doesn't really matter. I'll wait for the release to the general
public just to see what happens. I do appreciate your reply.

Mr. Green,

Yes, you are correct in assuming that I "restored" the SP1 update being
offered. I then rebooted to see if it would go away and it did not. I have
performed several reboots since that time. However, I guarantee you that I
have not downloaded it yet. I have since rehidden it in order to see how
Windows Update handles it when SP1 RTM is released to the general public.
Again, I did a clean install on 02/26/2008 and no SP1 Betas have been
installed on this machine since the clean install. No registry hacks have
been done.
I'm only wondering why the SP1 update was offered to me at this time
and whether it is the SP1 Refresh 2 or the SP1 RTM. I am running Ultimate
X86 so it was not mistakenly offered to me as it was for some X64 users. I
assume it is the RTM as it is listed as Windows Vista Service Pack 1,
KB936330. Curiosity, that is all.
However, if SP1 is indeed offered to me again, while the previous SP1
offering remains hidden, I will install the second SP1 offering and see what
happens with the one I have chosen to hide. Again, just curiosity as to how
the Windows Update process is going to handle this. No problems. No
complaints
I may decide to just reformat and do another clean install once it is
publicly released. It doesn't take that long to do as I always save my
programs on an external drive to make an install quicker since I do not have
to search websites for the downloads. Also, this machine, without SP1, is
incredibly fast and it only takes appx. 90 minutes for a reformat and clean
install, all additional updates included.
