PC World would do a destructive restore, charging you for something you can
do yourself..

Blue screens display error codes which are useful in diagnosing problems. It
would help if we knew what they were/are..

Missing dll's error messages can occur because a program installation has
screwed for reasons unknown, or because the installation failed on account
of the program not being suitable for use with Vista, or because a program
has been uninstalled incorrectly.

Can you remember what you did just prior to any of the problems showing up?

If your computer still has a workable CD/DVD burning program which works,
now would be a good time to get acquainted with it.

Save (burn) all of your pictures, music etc. Having done that, you will need
to contact HP support and ask them how you change the function in BIOS which
allows you to access the destructive recovery process from an F key which is
pressed as and when shown on the HP initialization screen. This function is
protected by BIOS to prevent accidental total erasure.

Carry out the destructive restore. After the machine has totally recovered,
go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Uninstall ALL trial versions of any games, MS Office 2007, Norton
'Absolutely Anything and Everything'.

Open your browser and get either AVG or Avast free anti-virus, then run
whichever you chose.

Now go to the HP support web site, download and save all drivers pertinent
to your computer. Some of these may well be newer than the versions
installed during the recovery process.

If you have external devices like printer, scanner, webcam, obtain Vista
drivers from the manufacturer web sites. Do NOT use the supplied
installation media unless it is specifically intended for use on a Vista
system.

Before installing anything new, reboot your system. Vista will create a
restore point which is useful if whatever you are installing fails or
creates problems. Always ensure that the system is working as you expect
before installing anything else.

After all of this, ensure that the computer boots without any errors. It
should in theory.

Now go to Windows Update and get everything EXCEPT for optional hardware
device drivers and language packs.

Your computer should still be working without error. If you get errors, most
likely you have a hardware problem, in which case you should chase the
warranty dept.

Download and install the latest version of Adaware, SpyBot, WinPatrol. Also
get Hostsman but ONLY from this web site..

http://www.abelhadigital.com/

Resist all temptations to use a registry cleaner. Some think CCleaner is ok,
but indiscriminate checking of 'crap to remove' can leave you wondering what
happened to a variety of things. This applies to Disk Cleanup too. Run it
with the default items ONLY checked unless you are sure that you want other
stuff gone and understand the implications of your choice.

Do NOT stop any services under the advice of others unless you understand
the full implications of so doing. Not all services in the list are running,
and some will only be called if you install a specific program or function.

Do NOT install RealPlayer, and if it already is, revisit the uninstall
function in Programs and Features. If anything asks for RealPlayer to be
installed, don't bother with it. Same with Quicktime. QuickTime movies can
be viewed with MediaPlayer 6.4 (which will in no way interfere with WMP 11).
It is easily found in a browser search.

When installing programs, it is a good idea to go for CUSTOM installs
because this is where you find the boxes checked by default which will
install unwanted and, for the most part, useless toolbars and other little
surprises.

One last thing. Buy another 1GB of RAM. It makes quite the difference.
