If you have the SBC-issued, four L.E.D. model (aka SS5100a), that is just a
dumb bridge, and the problem will be with the Vista PPPoE client. In which
case, this is more of a Windows Vista problem than an Internet Explorer
problem. In case this is your circumstance, I have cross posted this to the
closest Windows Vista group I have subscribed.

If you have the SBC-issued, five L.E.D. model (aka SS5100B), that modem can
handle the PPPoE session, and you don't need the OS PPPoE client. Log in to
the modem at 192.168.0.1 (you will need the 10-digit (Modem Access Code on
the yellow sticker on the bottom to enable any changes) and set the modem to
"PPP is on the modem, use a public IP address". But this is getting into ISP
specific information, and you would be better served on an ISP specific
forum.

Note that those links go to AT&T West (the 'sf' in the first is for San
Francisco). If you prefer web access, use the second link; and check the
tabs at the top of the page. The forums are region specific, and the states
covered by each region are listed at the top of the forum page for the
region. For client access (such as MS Outlook Express), you will need to log
in using your primary account full email address, and password. The
following link lists the region specific server names (though all are
currently aliases to the same server, so any should work):

If you have a generic SS5100 (or a different ISP-branded model), and another
ISP than AT&T (formerly SBC), I have no helpful advice, beyond consult with
your device documentation and your ISP.
