Showing Window Contents while Dragging

I can go into the "Personalization" area of Control Panel, and under the
"Window Color and Appearance/Effects" section, I can check the box to "show
window contents whle dragging." So far, so good; I can see the contents
while I drag the windows around my screen. I can even reboot and have the
setting remain intact.

But frequently (several times a week!), the setting somehow turns itself
off, and I'm back to dragging around empty boxes. I have to go through the
whole process to check the box again. That gets extremely annoying. It
seems pretty random--at least I haven't been able to find any activity that
consistently resets the feature.

Is there any way to make that setting stick permanently? Is there another
place to change the setting? Is there a Registry setting I can add that
will set the feature on every time I reboot?

Re: Showing Window Contents while Dragging

Thanks, Mark. That ("1") is my current setting. But it won't "stick," and
tomorrow (or the next day), I'll find that it has mysteriously been reset to
"0."

Would modifying it directly in the registry, rather than through Control
Panel make any difference in the the permanence of the setting?

Any thoughts/clues about what might be resetting the key? I've done a
little bit of troubleshooting, but I haven't been able to pinpoint anything
that seems to be involved.

Re: Showing Window Contents while Dragging

Well, I'm quite sure I know why it happens. You lack the resources necessary
(in Vista's opinion) to adequately run the Aero personalization theme. (or
at least that part of it.) Something will probably load up your ram to the
point of paging to the Virtual Memory beyond some Vista defined point. I
have 3 gigs of ram, and a 400 gig half full hard drive set, and I still pop
out of Vista Aero if I get a huge amount going. Of course, it's likely you
and I demand more of the system than the average user.

Re: Showing Window Contents while Dragging

Thanks, again, Mark. I believe you've hit the nail on the head. As a
matter of fact, I'm planning to add more memory this weekend (only got 1.5 G
so far).
I have noticed that the multimeter gadget that shows the processor's (AMD
Turion X2, 1.6 GHz) core usage gets pegged quite a bit during boot-up
sequence. That may be where the resources are lacking. Guess I've also got
on the stick and troubleshoot what I'm loading at startup that is burdening
the processor so heavily.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to rate your helpfulness. I
am logged into MS Communities through the Internet. Using Outlook's
Newsreader, I've come to this message by two routes: through
"msnews.microsoft.com" and through "news.verizon.net". Through msnews, I
get a message that I need to log in to the community, but the button doesn't
seem to do anything--it won't log me in, regardless of whether I'm logged in
over on the community website. Through verizon, I don't get a rating
option.

Joe
