Event Viewer Error

Since maybe yesterday, but certainly very recently, there is a strange
problem with my Event Viewer in Vista HP

I can view the logs, but Custom Views are producing the message "Event
Viewer cannot open the event log or custom view. Verify that the Event Log
service is running. The event log file is corrupted (1500)" However, I can
view the Windows Logs and the Applications and Services Logs - but if I
attempt to apply a filter I receive exactly the same message.

All relevant services are running... no recent updates except Windows
Defender definitions.

Any ideas?

TIA

Re: Event Viewer Error

Hmmmm.... this looks like a bug in Vista (here Vista HP, fully updated; for
comparison see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885458/en-us for a similar
Win 2000 issue)

According to the System Event log properties, the Log Size is 20,975,616
bytes but the Maximum Log Size is 20480KB (=20,971,520 byes)... i.e. it is
currently exactly 4KB oversize.

What's the recommended action? Just clear the oversize log(s)?
