I dealt with the strangest situation today. I setup a new user on a Vista
Ultimate computer as an administrator. All works as expected as the new user
has full file-system permissions - with a couple of major exceptions.

The user account was setup using default settings for IE7. The new user
cannot print HTML-formatted e-mail in Outlook 2003, but can print plain text
formatted messages just fine. When she attempts to print an HTML-formatted
message there are no errors and nothing is sent to the spooler. It just
magically disappears without any error message or event log entry. She can
print from Word and Excel, even if she cuts and pastes HTLM from the e-mail
message to Word. It prints just fine In like manner, she can print from all
other applications reqardless of format.

In addition, she cannot use several of the various websites we tested
randomly. If she goes to Hotmail, the page comes up blank. Neither can she
display a map on Mapquest, though she can successfully enter the address
information, etc. She can see driving directions, but can't print them.
When she does, the same disappearing act as described for Outlook above takes
place. So bottom line is that she's got spotty browser functionality and no
HTML printing (even if she selects text from a page and attempts to print it.

But here's where it gets weird. Another user created in like manner on the
same machine has full functionality. No speial settings as both were setup
pretty much plain-Jane and both are administrators. In fact, I can login as
the known-good user, perform all tasks, do a "Switch User" to the other new
administrator and see all of the errors I've described above. Whether
switching back and forth or loging in and out, the behaviour is identical.
All is right with the world for the one and hinked-up for the other.

After messing with this for some time, I deleted the new user account
(including deleting all profile-related files) and re-created it from
scratch. Same results. I suggested she change her name, but that didn't go
over so well ..

Any ideas out there? Help!!

PS - The Gateway computer is current with all patches etc. and seems
perfectly healthy for the one lucky user.

That's right, you Multi-Posted it.

Next time Cross-Post it. That means you put the names of the multiple news groups in the
one post such that the one post goes to the multo\iple news groups.

This way if someone replies, all news groups also get the reply and all readers, and you,
benefit from the discussion.

Learning how to use a News Client, such as WinMail, will also benefit you.

You're saying that the 'Alice' original account couldn't print (and
so on), a new 'Beatrice' account was ok, and after deleting and
recreating the 'Alice' account it still wouldn't work properly? Well
the account name is neither here nor there (unlike in Linux where it
turns up on mail items) so using a new account with, say, 'Amelia'
as the ID shouldn't hurt, at least for a while till we figure out
what happened.

It sounds like a weird permissions issue, one of those that is
rather hard to track down. Work round it if you can.

I have only ever seen this one before; on XP, and the solution was to
register OLE32.DLL, reboot and Viola!

name in the control panel?
