On my XP Pro laptop I was able to place a "My Documents" toolbar along the
right side of the screen. Set to "auto-hide", all I had to do was move the
curser to the right side of the screen, and the toolbar would pop up. I used
it for quick access to all my work files and folders.

I can't figure out how to do this on my new Vista laptop. The best I can do
is add a "Documents" toolbar to the taskbar, but even when it's "unlocked" I
can't relocate it to a different location on the the screen.

I can actually live with it on the taskbar, but the only way it functions is
as in a "scrolling format" where you move the curser to a folder, then the
folder contents scroll out to the left. With my filing system I've got
folders within folders that makes this "scrolling" take too long to get to
deep files.

Is there any way to create a "Documents" taskbar to include folders that you
can just left click and "open" the contents of the folder?

Hi Bob,

See if this would meet your needs.
Right click the Start menu then left click Properties.
On the Start Menu tab select Customize.
Scroll down where you see Documents and select "Display as a link"
Click OK

Now click Start and you should see Documents listed.

in vista you can place a new toolbar only on the top..

to do this drag the folder up to the very top of the screen and dont let the
mouse button go until you
"collide" to the top of the screen with your mouse arrow and then release
the mouse button,
the toolbar will appear with the behavior you are used to in XP

tell me if this helps...

if you want there are OTHER solutions for a side toolbar but this would mean
you would use third party application.. IF you are interested tell me and
ill tell you how

If you want a SIDE BAR and not a TOP bar as I described you will need a
third party application

1. Open Windows Explorer (not maximized).

2. Left Click Drag your Documents folder(or your user folder)to the
screen edge of the destop.

3. Let go of the mouse button and enjoy your new toolbar.

4. Right click your new toolbar and select autohide or any other
option.

An even easier way is

Click "START" then left click drag your "DOCUMENTS" folder (or any
other) from the right pane to the screen edge

Left, right and top all work with drag and drop on this machine. I think
top-only is peculiar to your machine.
