| SP1 and defragging FYI: SP1 allows you to select individual vols to defrag via the GUI. There is still no display of fragmentation or progress of defragging It just took 12 minutes on my relatively new/clean setup of Vista with SP1, though I had used XP SP2's on it 2 days ago. |

| Re: SP1 and defragging You can download 2 free defrag utils here to use along with the vista one, these have visual feedback (I like the first one better) http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag http://www.defraggler.com/ "CZ" <CZ@no99spam.com> wrote in message news:%23Nq0a2wfIHA.1188@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > FYI: > > SP1 allows you to select individual vols to defrag via the GUI. > There is still no display of fragmentation or progress of defragging > It just took 12 minutes on my relatively new/clean setup of Vista with > SP1, though I had used XP SP2's on it 2 days ago. |

| Re: SP1 and defragging Listen, there is no need to download any "free" defrag utilities which may well be malware. Vista does defrag in the background if you leave computer overnight. it will even do it when the machine is in sleep mode with a power saving option. Don't worry about defrag. MS has taken care of it. | Re: SP1 and defragging I am not saying that everything you offer to people is malware. What I am saying that (1) Most of the stuff you offer is AVAILABLE in Vista. Then why will the user pay cash for something that simply duplicates existing services. I bet most of them use elementary DOS commands or VBScript files generated on a temporary basis form an "exec." (2) If you give me an iron clad assurance that what I download as "free" software is malware free for every offer out there and back it up with a good bet, I will take it. If enough cash is provided I will do hard nosed research trying to prove my point. I think you have a good chance to lose your shirt. It is a know fact that most of them are Trojan horses. The reason I am so concerned about it that I realize that security of my computing depends on security of the whole community. If malware progenitors have no foothold my computers will be problem free. The malware is contagious. Also I am concerned that people are being ripped off for the lack of knowledge about simple available options like DOS commands. | Re: SP1 and defragging I actually considered it for a very very special operation but for that no Internet access will be needed, only LAN and it will be highly computational. It is way in the future. I may be actually looking into Unix. For all things considered Linux is a dead horse as far as any flexibility and stability goes. It is a firm fact. | Re: SP1 and defragging I give people top quality professional advice, most of the times its stuff I have tested myself, but in the rare occasion that its something that I have not tested myself I tell them. I deeply care about users... and I always give 110% ... I would never tell them to download something that may have malware. There is not one chance in a quadrillion that those programs I suggested have any malware. If you KNEW more about general products and not only what Microsoft gives you then you would know that these programs are being suggested by many techs, not only me. The built in stuff that Microsoft has are very basic, for more serious stuff or more features you install other programs dah.... its like saying you should install Photoshop because it may be malware.. and you have Microsoft paint built in to vista. Visual feedback is considered a feature... if you don't believe visual feedback is important PLEASE UNPLUG YOUR MONITOR AND SIT THERE STARRING AT YOUR EMPTY SCREEN! Cut the nonsense... some people in here know what they are talking about. Clean up your act, have more acceptance for people around the world, stop being such a racist, and I will promise you that we can get along very well. Most of the add-ons people download from your websites are used only on a limited basis. Don't tell me that sh*it. You are "professional." Professionals do not behave this way. | Your Professional advice "On the Bridge!" <On@the,Bridge> wrote in message news:47cf5700$1@newsgate.x-privat.org... >I give people top quality professional advice, most of the times its stuff >I have tested myself, So you give professional advice? Here is the question: Do I overseed my lawn and try to thicken things up with good quality grass, or do I put down the Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass preventer to ensure I don't get that nasty stuff poping up in my yard this year. Crabgrass was pretty bad last year, but I'm working with builder-grad (read: crappy) sod and trying really hard to improve it with better quality grass seed. But in doing the latter each of the past couple of years, I think i've helped the crabgrass really take route in my yard. The problem is the pre-emergent that prevents crabgrass from growing also prevents new grass from growing.... so it really is one or the other. I think after two years taking the overseeding route, I have to do the crabgrass prevention and wait til the fall to try to overseed. Any thoughts/comments/suggestions? |

While some of the third party applications can do this. |
