CD/DVD no longer works

The CD/DVD no longer works if I put a CD in the drive it says "Insert Disc" I
have not installed any new software. If I have a CD in when I start the
computer I can hear the CD spin up so I know the CD works. I have tried to
unistall and reinstall driver with no luck..

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

Hi...try this: go to start...then computer...*right* click...properties,
hardware, device manager...cd/dvd drive, *right* click *uninstall* the
drive, click ok, restart computer. Windows will find drive and correct
drivers upon restart. Please post back with results.

Open the case and see is the cables have come loose.
If a laptop make sure the drive is firmly seated in its bay.

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

You are supposed to go to the registry, find
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the upper and lower
filters. See support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060 for complete
details. In my case, however, I cannot find the upper and lower filters. I
have attached a copy of the registry key and if someone can tell me where the
upper and lower filters are I will be eternally grateful.

Phil

That KB article (314060) is written for Windows XP, not Vista.

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

No wonder it didn't work. But Vista will still not recognise my DVD as a
DVD, only as a CDRom. I have tried everything suggested in this post and I
still can not get a DVD driver installed-only a CD driver. What do I do?

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

Check the following articles to see if any of these apply.

When you insert a CD or a DVD, Windows Vista may not recognize the disc:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939052

You may be unable to read from DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL discs that were recorded
in Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933207

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that
you upgraded to Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Windows Vista does not detect a DVD-R disc that was formatted two times:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948177

When you try to use DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs interchangeably, a consumer
electronics DVD player or DVD recorder may be incompatible with the DVD
drive in a Windows Vista-based computer:

The article 929461 is exactly the one that you told me is not for Vista. I
cannot find the upper and lower filters.

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

Thanks for your very quick response, but I have applied the fixes in every
one of these articles, and my computer still insists on using a CD driver
instead of a DVD driver. I am getting ready to smash it to bits, but even
then I don't think it would help.

Phil

See my reply to D. Meyer in this thread.

The presence of the Upper and Lower Filters in those registry keys may
depend on a third party CD/DVD application being installed on the system.

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

Hi Peter,

This is what I found-there were 2 keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives\Volume{2f2918b9-8318-11dc-966b-806e6f6e6963}]
"Drive Type"=dword:00000011
"IsImapiDataBurnSupported"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives\Volume{2f2918b9-8318-11dc-966b-806e6f6e6963}\Current Media]
"Blank Disc"=dword:00000001
"Live FS"=dword:00000000
"Can Close"=dword:00000000
"Set"=dword:00000001

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives\Volume{3c9bf32e-8a21-11db-8189-806d6172696f}]
"Drive Type"=dword:000053f7
"IsImapiDataBurnSupported"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD
Burning\Drives\Volume{3c9bf32e-8a21-11db-8189-806d6172696f}\Current Media]
"Blank Disc"=dword:00000001
"Live FS"=dword:00000000
"Can Close"=dword:00000000
"IsImapiDataBurnSupported"=dword:00000000
"Set"=dword:00000001

I appreciate your help.

Phil

PS to Don: you have to go to RUN and type in Regedit and follow the steps to
find the key.

Re: CD/DVD no longer works

The KB does work for Vista. The KB article I have says it's for XP and Vista
Beta 2, but it does work on the final release of Vista. I use it all the
time.

Vista has a habit of braking communications with the CD/DVD ROM for no
reason. Hopefully this will be fixed in SP 1 Along with Vista resetting to
default setting for no reason.

Here's a copy of my reg entry. Sometimes there is both the upper and Lower
filter. The st5eps I go through to fix the CD/DVD issue is to go to Device
Manager and Uninstall all CD/DVD ROMs---go to the reg key and delete the
upper and lower filters if any---make sure you back up the registry first.
