| Need to run CHKDSK Were trying to back up C: (Vista) but it complains that there is an error on the disk and advises to run CHKDSK. If I do this with the normal system running, I'm told I don't have sufficient rights to continue even though I'm logged in as an administrator. If I try running it in safemode, Vista tells me there is some other process using the disk. Can someone tell me how to cope with this? TIA |

How can I find out what process? Scheduling CHKDSK to run after a reboot doesn't help, even in safe mode. |

Again, Vista claims some other process is using the disk. My question stands: How can I find out which process? Or, how can I bring up a very abbreviated system that doesn't have lots of services etc running that might be getting in the way? |

| Re: Need to run CHKDSK When you instruct chkdsk to run at the next boot there will not be any processes running to interfere with chkdsk. You can not run chkdsk with the /f option from within Windows. Chkdsk can NOT work with an active operating system (if you are trying to check the O/S partition). Make certain you initiate chkdsk from an elevated command prompt (ie: with administrator privileges). -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Stubby" <William.Plummer*NO*SPAM*@alum.mit.edu> wrote in message news:m8-dnXNMeL_wxS7anZ2dnUVZ_siknZ2d@comcast.com...[color=blue] > "DarkSentinel" <darkmungesentinel@munge.charter.munge.net> wrote in > message > news:196DECB5-53C0-4F09-AB7C-6A1F5BF2719C@microsoft.com...[color=green] >> >> >> "Stubby" <William.Plummer*NO*SPAM*@alum.mit.edu> wrote in message >> news:jK-dnXCrjO0diS_anZ2dnUVZ_g6dnZ2d@comcast.com...[color=darkred] >> > >> > "Peter" <nobody@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> > news:OTkSWjZbIHA.1376@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> >> "Stubby" <William.Plummer*NO*SPAM*@alum.mit.edu> wrote in message >> >> news:L8idnXKLx68pUyzanZ2dnUVZ_oGjnZ2d@comcast.com... >> >> > Were trying to back up C: (Vista) but it complains that there is an >> > error >> >> > on >> >> > the disk and advises to run CHKDSK. Check disk absolutely will not start up after shutting down the system or doing a reboot. I've gone into safe mode, no luck, DOS prompt, no luck. I've done some searching and a LOT of people are having this issue. I really need to to a system restore, but can't because I get a message saying I have to run check disk. MS really needs to address this issue. Oh, and they want to charge me $59 so they can help me solve THEIR problem? HA! |

CHKDSK with no switches will run and discover errors. But CHKDSK /r cannot fix errors because of the other process(es) that are also accessing the disk. CHKDSK scheduled to run after a restart doesn't seem to do anything. Now, I notice the disk light is on solid on the computer (GF's) and that probably explains why CHKDSK can't lock the drive. I tried ProcessExplorer from System Internals but it doesn't show how many disk accesses are made by various processes. A few processes seemed to use a bit of CPU time, but that's what I expect if they are always waiting for a disk operation to complete. Does Vista have some sort of built-in always running disk optimizer? There must be a stand-alone NTFS disk repair utility somewhere. Does anybody know of one? TIA |

DK came already installed on the Lenovo machine and is well hidden as it doesn't show up on the process activity list. My guess is that is locking the drive such that CHKDSK can't use it. If someone can tell me how to kill off DK, I'll be thankful. |
