Okay Forum, here is a question for you. I just bought a new computer and
installed Vista Ultimate on it. This is a high end machine that is custom
built but I'm having quite a few problems with Vista crashing. At first I
thought it might be the memory, mother board or video card but all check out.
Now I notice that the error messages all seem to point to Vista. I've even
had the dreaded "Blue screen of death" pop up twice. I had not seen that
since the days of Windows ME.

My question is this, Do we have another bad version of a Microsoft
operating system like Windows ME or do we just need time to wait for
Microsoft to fix this pig. I replace my corporate computers every three
years and the time is coming to do it soon, do I stick with XP which has been
pretty darned stable? I know this is a combo philosophical/technical
question but I'd appreciate some educated guesses on this.

I custom-build all of my PC's and on both my desktop, my laptop and my
girlfriend's laptop, Vista has been insanely stable. All-around, it is the
best OS I have ever had. I have a lot of trouble believing that it is being
compared to Windows ME that, to me, was an utter disaster.

If Vista is crashing, it may be due to you installing non Vista compliant
software. Just because something will run on XP doesn't mean it's going to
run on Vista. I have never had Vista Ultimate crash once, since April 2007,
and I do a lot of things with Vista like running IIS, SQL Server, VS 2005
and others.

The one non compliant piece of non Vista software that I did install started
Explorer crashing. So I rolled back to a restore point that didn't have the
software, and I went on about my business.

wait a few days to get SP1, I just installed SP1 and I have seen great

The only real problem with Windows ME is it shared the single 16 bit
processing thread that the O/S used with other 16 bit programs such as
drivers. If the 16 bit program had a problem on the thread, then the O/S
was most likely going to have a problem too.

My first laptop I brought had Win ME. It never had a problem, until I
brought a wireless card for the laptop, plugged it in, and installed the 16
bit driver for the card.

Then the O/S started crashing. It was due to a car, truck, motorcycle or
anything that want past that put out heavy frequencies. The driver for the
card was 16 bit running on the 16 bit thread that the O/S used too. So, when
the driver crashed, the whole O/S crashed with it.

I corrected the problem by going to a NT based O/S, which was Win 2K and
later to XP, and never had another problem with wireless, since those O/S(s)
runs on a protected thread. Vista is an NT based O/S.

I agree with the other posts and will add that you may have a piece of
hardware (drivers) that is causing Vista fits. If you load Vista on a bare
drive (not upgrade) in a system that is not overclocked using a valid
Microsoft DVD and don't use vLite or any other tricks and are immediately
unstable (before installing additional third-party drivers), you need to
check *all* components for compatibility with Vista. If you go blue you will
get the information you need to pinpoint the problem and make an adjustment.

It sounds like you built quite a rig and like the rest of us who don't like
to bring their computers home in one box, we sometimes pay to be "bleeding
edge". However, if you just bought it you should rely on the builder to take
some responsibility before your return window closes or your warranty
expires. It sounds like they still have some work to do...

Hmm...I have been running a custom built Vista box from scratch with Vista
on it since Day 1 of Vista and not one glitch, slow down BSOD or
anything,,,Machine is smokin fast and stable !!...In the past I have run xp
(at least 3 boxes)....Win ME (1 box)....Win98 (2 boxes) and 1 Win95
box....The only one I EVER had a problem with is the Win ME box and that was
just because it was a underpowered Packard bell....Vista though has been by
far the best performance wise !!

Hi Mark,

Perhaps if you would post a list of these error messages you are getting,
I/We can help you out. If it is as bad as you seem to make it appear to be,
it is definitely not all Vista, if Vista at all.

I have to concur with the other posters. Despite the numerous shortcomings
in Vista, crashing is something I have NEVER experienced in the 378 days
I've been running it. (Of course, crappy apps crash sometimes, but never
Vista itself).

This does sound like a hardware problem or possible a dodgy hardware driver.

What blue screen? Was there a STOP error code?

What did it say?

Have you ran MemTest86 to make sure the components such as RAM were fine?
How is the cooling situation?
