Re: ALL .exe files dont work

Yeah, command.com is an old executable form left over from the MS-DOS daze.
Who'd know it would have a use today.

Your caution is correct in messing with the registry. A good practice in
regedit is to export (file/export) a copy before you begin an edit session.
Then if you make a bad edit you can import (file/import) and restore it to
the state before your mistake.

If I understand what you wrote: you left some values in the UserChoice key.
You should delete this key altogether. It was created and filled with stuff
when you erroneously associated .exe with wordpad. Click UserChoice in the
left pane to select it and press delete. So, under
[...Explorer\FileExts\.exe] you will only have only two keys, OpenWithList
and OpenWithProgids.

For reference:
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\UserChoice]

Then you should be good to go and hopefully icons will also appear
correctly. If not, check back.

For those of you who for safety reasons don't wish to use "tinyurl" you
should click on the link below for the file association fixes. This is
probably the same webpage offered on the tinyurl link but I don't really
know.

http://www.winhelponline.com/article...ows-Vista.html

I would advise against using "tinyurl" or any other URL shortening
service for that matter because you don't really know where you are being
directed to. Chances are that you would be directed to a legitimate website
using "tinyurl", but then again, chances are that you will be directed to a
website containing adware, spyware or serious malware.
Of course, this is only my personal opinion. The choice is yours to
make.

There is now a TinyURL that includes a preview feature for the weak
hearted.

Re: ALL .exe files dont work

yes ty Jane C and others for that awesome link!
However, I get the same error as Timothy:
Cannot import the .reg; error accessing the registry.

So how do you open command.com? I am less computer savvy,
but am still as crippled from this .exe association problem as anyone
else.

Also, how do i change the text, and what is the 'UserChoice'? As far as
I know, Vista OS opens an .exe; I have no clue what the true default
program is used to open my files. Someone please assist the illiterate!
thanks
