RE: UAC is off but I still cannot delete

This was more than a reply; it was litterly a lesson in Vista Security. It
was beautiful. It was helpful and I appreciate it. I was not able to
transfer the files to the Recycle Bin because it refused to take them.
Perhaps I was doing something wrong. I was able to remove the inheritances
from the Documents folder, then transfer the files to that, then to the
Recycle Bin (where they were lost). I am rid of the files now and I really
appreciate your work. It was good of you to answer my plea for help. Thnks.

Re: UAC is off but I still cannot delete

Try activating the Real Administrator account in Group Policies. Then
re-logon as the Real Administrator. Now set the permissions of all the
folders in the Programs Files to have the ordinary user with administrator
rights (not the Real Administrator) so the ordinary administrator has
complete control. Now deactivate the Real Administrator and you as a user
with ordinary administrator rights should be able to delete most everything.

A curiosity. I found that even the REAL Administrator could not change
permissions on windows folders within Program Files. I guess our computer
isn't really ours.

Re: UAC is off but I still cannot delete

I told you Tommie that files from Windows.ooo cannot be transferred to the
recycle bin. The bin cannot handle that large a volume. It is almost half of
you HDD's software.

If you want to save Windows.ooo you must do it on external HDD or an extra
HDD in your machine (internal).

The lesson is: if you want to delete any folders you must clear those
windows that control Security\users\inheritance one by one thoroughly. Then
you can do anything. In the process you understand what is Vista all about.
And you did it.

Vista is an IQ test. It is not for stupid people. But is is also beautiful.

It did....to most. Let me rephrase that then, in a not-so-contemporary
way (comtemporary may not be the word, maybe 'urban' is the word).......

I can't believe that a MS MVP would have just stated in a publicly
accessible newsgroup that they actually have Ubuntu installed on a PC,
that they *do* use it, and have stated that they actually *like* it.

Or, the short form........

Oh no you di'int !!!!

There have been several MVPs state that they use some version
of Linux. They may not use it as their primary OS, but I'm sure
just like many of us curious tech types, they've at least tried it.
I've played around with several versions of Linux, but I still prefer
Windows. I'm sure of the MVPs have IT jobs that may require some
usage of Linux.

Re: UAC is off but I still cannot delete

Why on earth would you think that an MVP would have such a limited outlook?.
I use many OS'. All of them have things that I like and dislike. If I had my
druthers I'd probably use Linux full time. Most of my customers use Windows
based servers so I feel I have to as well. Windows clients work best with
Windows servers. I know of MVPs who use OS X and Linux as their primary OS'.
Even at Microsoft you will see employees using Macs. One the most
knowledgeable Unix people I know is a Microsoft MVP. You are guilty of
stereotyping.

I was really just trying to interject some humor into the thread.

Maybe it is wrongful stereo-typing *in this case*. So be it.

I just haven't really seen any MVP here express an affinity for a linux
distro. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, just that I don't recall. At
most it's usually 'I tried it out' said on passing.

Guess I was having a grumpy morning. I took it the wrong way :-)

In addition to being geeks most MVPs are curmudgeons as well. I certainly
fit the bill if you believe this definition.

curmudgeon

noun
a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas

Why? I've seen more than a few mention it. Not all MVPs are fanbois.

It would be a bit foolish not to recognize and monitor a competitor's
products don't you think?

As for having Ubuntu installed on a PC - well - my electric toothbrush
doesn't have enough RAM.

I have Ubuntu, Debian, and Vista all on PCs here, and they all work, and
I have tried numerous other versions of Linus and Solaris. It has
nothing to do with being a fanboy or not, it is a case of being able to
judge the "User Experience" with other systems and provide a fair
comparison.

Yes I use it, in fact am doing so to post this, and part of the reason
for that is I think MS are in need of a wake up call due to their
annoying WGA / WPA posture which plain doesn't bug you with Linux, plus
you are paying for that with Windows and paying nothing at all for Ubuntu.

There is no doubt that for many things Windows is better, games for
example. It's not that it works better, it is simply the range of
products available. But compared to XP Vista started off very poor for
games, many did not work, many run slower etc, and yes that is in no
small way the fault of the authors, but the fact is that being a version
of "Windows" many people expected their games to run and if anything
expected better performance not worse. It is all about expectations.

I still like XP and I hope MS continue to sell if for a long time to
come, it will in the end benefit their business and their reputation,
nobody likes to buy a new car because the maker built in obsolescence,
and for may machines Vista is never going to be satisfactory. I don't
want to see MS drive customers away.

The problem they could be heading for is this. Vista is expensive but
has few advantages over XP. Linux is free and useful to many except
maybe gamers. Most Linux apps are free too. I have found I can use Linux
at home and at work and it integrates well with the company system which
is of course XP based. Apart from one crazy printer it all works
together very well. When people see it they say "What the hell is that?"
but then they realize that it works. No I have not set out to "Convert"
anyone and nobody has switched, but they ask the question and get to
know there's a choice. If this is happening more and more then it may
reach a point where an awful lot of MS customers just decide not to buy
preinstalled (Which of course is a very large percentage at the moment)
and just save the $50 or whatever and use Linux. The more it gets used
the more it gets seen and you could get a feedback effect that seriously
damages sales.

So while I do have criticisms about Microsoft's business practices from
time to time I also think it would be a very bad thing for them to just
vanish from the market.
