A shadow copy could not be completed for the following reason: Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported (0x8004230C) I was doing a full system backup to an HP portable media drive (500gb). My computer has 3 partitions set by the OEM C: D: Recovery drive E: I am reposting this as I have not had any previous replys. |

| Re: Full Backup Fails Probably the recovery drive is causing your failure. Most of the OEMs have various utilities that "lock" that away from casual access. So exclude it from your backup. | Re: Full Backup Fails Thanks for the suggestion but still no luck. Additional information A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason: The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation (0X81000101) As for the comments suggesting the backup utility is not supported can you direct me somewhere that confirms this. Every piece of documentation I have (specific to Home Premium) provides instructions on running the backup as I have been doing) "Richard G. | Re: Full Backup Fails Not sure this will be helpful, but: I have Vista Home Premium and it does not come with full system backup; I believe you have to have Ultimate or Business to have that feature. My automatic backup of files and folders works just fine. | Re: Full Backup Fails Tried again but same results. Just to be clear on what I am doing. I have Windows Vista Home Premium (HP OEM) I run Backup and Restore Center from Control Panel Select Back up files - This displays C,D,E drives. (C Defaults) I remove D and E from the backup and run the backup. Note: the utility does not provide for any greater granularity than the drive level. Vista asks which file types to backup - I leave the defaults (ALL) Vista asks how often to create a backup - I select daily, then Save settings and start backup Backup Files Dialog Box displays "Creating Shadow Copy" After about an hour the backup fails with the messages provided previously. Is there an I HATE VISTA WEB-SITE? After years of trouble free computing with 2000 and XP the last 4 months have been nothing but trouble with this operating system! (Sorry for the rant) "John Hanley" wrote: > Not sure this will be helpful, but: I have Vista Home Premium and it does > not come with full system backup; I believe you have to have Ultimate or > Business to have that feature. | Re: Full Backup Fails Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't include the GUI to restore lost files in the Home Basic/Premium editions, even though the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is also included and fully running! But luckily there is a third party tool at 'ShadowExplorer.com' (http://www.shadowexplorer.com) which allows you to browse the Shadow Copies and restore files if needed! |

| Re: Full Backup Fails It's caused by disabled services - I had the same problem with MS automatic updates. -Click on the pearl then type "Services" in the search box (Don't type in the quotes, of course). -Right click on Services (with the gears beside it) and pick Run As Administrator (I don't know if this in necessary, but I run everything in Vista as admin...That way programmes have an XP feel to them and actually, you know, work.) -Head down the list to "Volume Shadow Copy", double click on it and enable it if it's not enabled. -Then go back up the list a bit to "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" and double click on it to enable it if it's disabled. After that, I went back to the control panel and, voila - a successful restore point was created. I didn't have to restart the computer to make this work, but that might be necessary for some. Happy Vista hacking, y'all! |

| Re: Full Backup Fails I am having a similar problem and I attempted to implement your solution. I am running Vista Ultimate (32 bit). When I looked under "services", the service called "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" is not among the services listed. What is the best way to restore such service to my system? I thought about inserting my Vista system disk and clicking "repair", but where I have already installed SP-1 on my system, I wasn't sure if this was a sound approach. any help would be appreciated.
