| Searching for file contents using Vista Search Facility Hi I am using Vista Business and pulling my hair out with this query........... I would like to search for the contents of a file on a network drive; i.e. search for all files that contain the text 'accounts'. I am using the Search facility in Vista but this option is not available. Accessing the 'Folder Options' I can see that this is available if I were searching my 'Indexed Locations' but it will not allow me to add a Network Drive to my list of 'Indexed Locations'. Can anyone help? This option was available on previous versions of Windows but not Vista. Is it a hidden feature that I need to activate or have Microsoft removed this facility from Vista all together? Help!! |

| Re: Searching for file contents using Vista Search Facility Well.. I would think for the Vista Search engine to work via a network that all connected PCs would have to run the same indexer, so to say "to share their indexes" .. Windows Desktop Search 3.x for XP is the same engine as that built in Vista, it's a free download from MS. Also I have read that the upcoming Windows Vista Server ( Server 2008 ) has network-search-capabilities alongside Vista-connected clients built in. You can download the DVD of that OS and get a free Trial Product Key also from MS ( see their Server Section on the site ). But basically I would guess that WDS 3.x for XP should deliver the same capabilities ( of course all the machines will need to have their hard drives fully indexed before any search will deliver what you asked for.. ) Good Luck Sascha / Germany "chris menzies" <chrismenzies@discussions.microsoft.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:9C97B7CA-0B99-4424-A9AE-05BD9ED40791@microsoft.com... > Hi > > I am using Vista Business and pulling my hair out with this > query........... > > I would like to search for the contents of a file on a network drive; i.e. > search for all files that contain the text 'accounts'. > > I am using the Search facility in Vista but this option is not available. > Accessing the 'Folder Options' I can see that this is available if I were > searching my 'Indexed Locations' but it will not allow me to add a Network > Drive to my list of 'Indexed Locations'. > > Can anyone help? > > This option was available on previous versions of Windows but not Vista. > Is > it a hidden feature that I need to activate or have Microsoft removed this > facility from Vista all together? > > Help!! > |

Select SEARCH from the right column of the start menu, in the top right corner of the search window you will see ADVANCED SEARCH. From this Advanced search window you can search any location on your local hard drive or across a network and even in non-indexed folders. Hope this helps -- The most reliable time to upgrade to a new Operating System is at the end of its life cycle. Dave |
