It frequently takes more than 30 minutes for it to even recognize there is a
wireless network in my home or in my place of business. I have fiddled, tried
direct configuration... it just doesn't see the network for a minimum of 15
minutes. When it does, it always loses the network once y ou shut down. I
have seen more than 1-thousand posts about this problem by doing a simple
Google search... is it ever going to be fixed? I never had this problem with
XP... ever... and I'm using the same networks and routers!
Calls to Microsoft have resulted only in "We are working on it" some help
that is!
Has anyone figured out how to successfully delete VISTA and install XP? My
new laptop came with VISTA...but I am dumping it... or returning the laptop
if it can't be dumped in favor of an OS that actually works for people that
need their computers for work. VISTA fails ever connection test.

I am sitting is a hotel room using Vista on a laptop on the hotel's
wireless. And it connects with no problems in about two seconds, and it's
not dropping the connection either. So, it's not as bad as you make it out
to believe. And the Sun will rise somewhere tomorrow. :)

I have also taken the laptop to work to client sites and connected to their
LAN to use the Internet connection with no problems, on a wire connection.

Are you sure the card and its driver are compatible with Vista?

The computer is brand new. It's a Gateway that my wife purchased for me this
Christmas the thing is so new even the Gateway sight doesn't recognize the
serial number. I went there hoping to find an updated driver. Vista tells me
the driver is fine, but it won't look on the Internet for a possible update.
The card is a TOPDOG PCI-Express 802.11 wireless (EC85)... as I write this
on my desk-top, the laptop is sitting on mykitchen table not 50 feet from me
looking for the wireless signal... in another 20 minutes or so it will find
it. The chief engineer at my work had the identical problem with his laptop
with a less-quality wirless system and managed to fix it whenhe came across a
beta version of a VIsta service pack. Microsoft knows it has a prblem with
this but is apparently not ready to offer the fix to the public.
Please do a quick Google search for "Vista doesn't see my network" and
look at how many responses you will get. There are even more if you Google
the newsgroups. This is a serious problem for Microsoft that they are
apparently not willing to admit to in public just yet.

I have seen time and time again that the card is not good enough nor its
driver when it comes to Vista and laptops. You should find someone that has
a USB standalone wireless card and plug it into the laptop to see what
happens. The O/S doesn't drop the connection or has trouble making the
connection. It's the card and its driver that have the problem and MS didn't
made or create either one of them.

I'll give it a try,but the exact card works fine with XP... it's only with
Vista that it fails to connect. It seems odd that Gateway would install an
incompatible card with its laptops, mine is an M-series, in fact the very
latest M-series the company produces. I will try a different card to know
for certain, but judging by the many people who are having the same problem,
and they number in the thousands, I would have to assume Microsoft is the
source of the problem, not a top of the line TOPDOG card. As you know it is
one of the best names in the business and they've been making these cards a
lot longer than Microsoft has been making Vista. Look at this very forum for
all the issues people are having with Vista and wireless service. There is
clearly a problem. I can't believe we ALL have faulty cards.

I'm no VISTA lover, but if you put a Ferrari engine in a Kia, without the
right software to control the fuel injection, it won't run.
That doesn't make the engine any less "top of the line" but it can't
function without the proper control system (driver).
The card may be top oif the line, but many pieces of hardware & drivers
don't function properly under Vista.
MS doesn't write the drivers, so I can't blame them for doing anything but
designing a Fisher-Price looking OS with a Nanny to ask...ARE YOU SURE over
and over again.

I didn't say it was a faulty card. I said that card and its driver are not
good enough to run with Vista. If you plug a standalone card into the laptop
and the problem doesn't follow, then that should tell you something.

The problem with most people and problem solving is that they can't think
outside the box.

And again, MS didn't make the card nor did MS create the driver for the
card.

One other thing, you might want to go to Device Manager, select the card,
right click, Properties, Driver tab, and see if the driver has been
digitally signed.

The driver for the wireless card on this HP laptop using an Intel(R)
PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
is signed with *microsoft windows hardware compatibility publisher*.
