| Ballina I have vista home premium 32 bit Computer 4 gigs memory, 2 raptor drives, 2.4 quad cpu intel. I just emptied 11 gigs of files from the recycle bin. I tried to do a manual defrag and I received this error - transaction support within the specified file system resource manaer not started or shut down due to error. I do have a problem with shut down as 80% of the time I have to turn off the electricity to shut down vista. It keeps restarting itself if I leave it alone. I do have a couple of programs installed that may be causing a conflict - is there a way to determine which ones? I read where defrag runs in the background - how can I tell it is working? | Re: Ballina When I go to a command prompt and right click the drop down menu does not include administrator. I did check the section that I am a administrator but after I key in the commands from the help menus I get the same error - must be done by a administrator. How do I get this fixed? | Re: Ballina Are you using Diskeeper? That is the only defragger I know that runs in the background. If so, you can access the Diskeeper counsol and it will tell you what it has done and what it is doing. -- Tilly821 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tilly821's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=39315 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=888327 http://forums.techarena.in |

| Re: Ballina I created another administrator account with standard account type. I'm getting updates. No I have no other defrag on Vista. I would like to know if it is defraging in the background. How do I check that? I am almost at the point of buying another defrag. Is diskeeper a good one? From the Vista Help file: "Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more efficiently. In this version of Windows, Disk Defragmenter runs at regular intervals when your computer is turned on, so you don't have to remember to run it. Disk Defragmenter is set to run every week to ensure your disk is defragmented. You don't need to do anything else. However, you can change how often Disk Defragmenter runs, and at what time of the day." |

| Re: Ballina I had to create a new user acct and give standard account type access and I was then able to run manual defrag. The setting on the automatic defrag was 1:00 a.m. every wednesday. That means this computer has not been defrag since I bought it which goes back to August 2007. I will look into that auslogic defrag. Thanks. One thing I don't like about the current defrag is you have no idea as to how long it will run. It been over 3 hours so far. I may have to leave the computer on all night as it is close to midnight already. | Re: Ballina shaw - took your advice and downloaded auslogics - it really does work fast. I deleted nero 7 as I had read on other posts that it affected windows performance so it was nice to have a quick defrag and have some information come back on the task. I was checking some of the performance test results that vista provides and one was that photoshop was causing it take longer to close. I bet it was because no defrag took place over a 6 month time frame. I have been creating digital images for paintings for an artist and they are large files as we are getting them printed into a book. I can image the amount of fragmented files that occurred. I didn't notice anything as photoshop comes up in an instant and closes just as fast on my computer. I used Auslogics to defrag the scratch disk and it went fast. Now I'm having it defrag my external 200 gig drive which is taking a while as I have several files and pictures on that drive. But at least I'm getting a idea of where it is at. Hard to believe that microsoft didn't put a % figure down while the defrag is working. -- Ballina ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ballina's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=39193 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=888327 http://forums.techarena.in |
