Remembering folder settings for individual folders

I'm not sure if this is a known issue - I've seen a thread on something
similar, but the implication in that thread is that windows just doesn't
remember your last folder settings. In my case, as far as I can tell, windows
is remembering the settings for individual folders, it's just remembering
them for the wrong folder, or it's just remembering it should have remembered
the view in that particular folder, but coming up with a random selection
instead.

This is pretty aggravating. If it is the same issue, is it going to be best
to not even try to remember the previous settings or will the suggested (but
pretty hairy looking) workrounds work?

If you would like Vista to remember your folder view settings, see this
tutorial.
