Connecting to the Internet using a Wireless Network

I have recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1502 laptop with Windows Vista
Business, and I'm trying to connect it to my home wireless network so that I
can access internet anywhere in the house. However, despite correctly
entering the SSID and WEP code and setting everything else to Automatic (eg.
IP, DNS, etc.) all I seem to get is a limited local connection via IP4 (my
router doesn't have IP6) that only seems to recieve, and I can't connect to
the internet or even to the router. I currently using a Kraun ADSL2+ wireless
router, which transmits 802.1a/b/g, and my wireless card can recieve all of
those.
I do notice that everytime I switch on WiFi, I also have to start the
wireless service manually; it doesn't start up of it's own accord. This may
be because a small while back I disabled or made many services manual in an
attempt to improve system performance, as the computer was going dreadfully
slow. I later found out that this was caused by my antivirus, so I tried to
reset the services back to their original settings, or so I thought I did.
Basically, my query is: is there any particular reason why my internet via
wireless connection shouldn't be automatic? What windows vista services/apps
are required to connect to the internet via a wireless network? Is having
everything set to automatic a good idea, or must I configure certain things
manually? My knowledge of networking and directly related fields is not that
good, so please keep all explanations relatively simplistic please.
I would be very grateful for any assistance or information regarding this
matter.

Re: Connecting to the Internet using a Wireless Network

I think you might have better luck contacting your router manufacturer
directly.

That said, I remember reading that Vista has trouble obtaining IP info
dynamically (using DHCP client) from some older routers. Verify that your
router is "Vista compatible".
