Windows Update doesn't work - error 80070643

I have 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've tried updating it
with the
Windows Update. Each time I've gotten an error code 80070643. I found
this
article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903772), but the
odd
thing is that I do not have Microsoft Office on my computer.

Windows Update also says that I should update Windows Update itself.
However, it doesn't seem to have any effects, and WindowsUpdate.log
file has
several errors.

Any ideas?

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. (Because of possible folder
corruption or other errors.)
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.
Create a new folder called "SoftwareDistribution"
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.
Rerun Windows Update.

I did according to your instructions, but the situation didn't change.
Apparently Windows Update seems to be unable to update itself.

Could there be folder/file corruption in any other folders? Or does
Windows Update only utilize the Software Distribution folder?

Error 80070643

Courtesy of: Sudheer GN, Microsoft, WU Client

If it is windows vista and you are seeing this error when trying to install updates,
please try the following:-

1.. Open an Administrator command prompt by right clicking on Start -> All Programs ->
Accessories -> Command Prompt and selecting "Run as Administrator" and clicking "Allow"
for the elevation prompt
2.. In the command prompt, type the command below fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
(This assumes that C: is the drive in which Vista is installed. If it is installed on
another drive like D:, please change the drive letter appropriately)
3.. Reboot the machine
This is the resolution only for 80070643 error while installing updates on Vista. This
doesn't apply for other OS like Windows XP SP2 etc
