Update ready to install upon shutoff

Every time I shutdown an update is installed. As soon as I start back up
there is always another yellow shield with an exclamation mark in it to
install another update. I suspect it is the same update as this has been
going on for quite sometime. Also freezes often. Any ideas?

RE: Update ready to install upon shutoff

Hi tradergee: I will assume you are running Vista since you're on this site.
Is your Windws update set to download and install updates automatically? If
so, change it!
Open the control panel and click security. In there you will find an icon
that says Windows update and under it a link that reads "turn automatic
updating on or off". Click this link and in the new window go to the button
that says "check for updates but let me choose when to install them". Check
this button and exit. In the future you will be notified when updates are
available. This will show up as a message in the lower right corner of your
screen. You will also see an update icon. Click the icon and you will get a
screen telling you how many updates are available and a link that says click
to view updates. Click this link but I would suggest you do not download the
listed updates unless they are for Windows Defender. Make a note of the KB
number. Go on line to "Ask Woody.com". Here you will find a listing of
updates running back a month or so and a summary of what the update is for.
This site monitors all Vista, XP and Microsoft applications for reliability
and any known problems. If you don't see the KB number you will have to
become a site member at which point you can ask the administrator for
information bout the update. These guys are good. You will get straight
answers as to any issues with Microsoft updates as well as general help for
many other MS problems. This guy writes the Windows for Dummies books and he
is in a constant feud with Microsoft over some of their stupid practices. If
you've already got your updates set to notify you, then ignore this message
and hope someone with more technical knowledge helps you out.
Best Regards and good luck
