| USB Thumb drives do not power off when properly ejected with Vista Business on a new toshiba laptop I am using Vista Business on a laptop. Inserting the sandisk cruzer chip loads a virtual CD rom and a Virtual hard drive and works fine until you tell it to eject the drives.. (this is also true for Sony 512 meg chips) When I tell it to eject (through the safely remove hardware wizard) it goes through all the motion and tells me its safe to remove the drive. However the light on the chip does not turn off and I get a warning from the software on the chip that the drive was removed prematurely.(when I plug it in someplace else) Is there a way to get vista to power off the chip when I tell it to eject. Thanks in advance |

| Re: USB Thumb drives do not power off when properly ejected withVista Business on a new toshiba laptop Yes, this is a new 'feature' in Vista. No known way to change this. | Re: USB Thumb drives do not power off when properly ejected with Vista Business on a new toshiba laptop Hi, Cynyster. Maybe I just don't understand, but... I never use the "safely remove" dialog. I just pull the plug. But when I first install the device, I go to Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) and right-click on the "disk", then click Properties | Policies. There I can choose between "Optimize for quick removal" and "Optimize for performance". I choose "quick removal" and then I can insert the thumb drive or SD Card reader or whatever any time I choose - and simply unplug it whenever I'm ready. This includes my SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2.0 GB thumb drive, but I'm not using its U3 functions; maybe that makes a difference. One small caveat: Don't be TOO hasty to unplug. The Optimize for performance option caches writes to the thumb drive; unplugging it too quickly after a write might cause it to lose data in the cache that has not yet been written to the drive (but the cache should be cleared within a few seconds, even with the performance setting). Optimize for quick removal SHOULD clear the cache after every write operation, but it doesn't hurt to give it a second or two just to be sure. With this setting, I DO see the Eject and Safely Remove options when I right-click on the drive in Computer, but I never use those options. I just wait a second then pull the plug. It works fine - for me. RC -- R. C.
