Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Hi, I am running windows vista home premium on my advent 7201 laptop. Just
recently when I try to open certain folders in my pictures it freezes up and
then a window opens saying that windows explorer has stopped working and is
restarting. This happens each time I try to open the folders. Then today
whilst trying to upload some picture for a listing on ebay there simply was
no way of doing it! It was as if my pictures had gone (but they have'nt!)
Then, when I clicked the X to close Internet explorer every open window
closed at the same time.. Very frustrating! I have tried to use system
restore to see if that helps but when the laptop starts up I have a window
that reads,

'System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computers system files
and settings were not changed.

Details: An unspecified error occured during system restore.'

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

James.

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

****, I've only had the laptop a few months... What would have caused this?
I have the discs but don't know how to take windows off and put it all back
on again..

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Vista has a new and very useful tool available for situations like this.
Control Panel (Classic view) > Problem Reports and Solutions.

In the left hand pane of Problem Reports and Solutions, click the "View problem
history" link. Right click on the problem and select "View problem details".
In the bottom left corner of the screen, press the "Copy to clipboard" link.
Paste in a reply to this thread.

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Have you Checked for Solutions? I don't see a Fault Bucket entry there,
which might be the key missing element.

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Do you have DaemonTools installed to this system? Does updating to their
latest version help fix this? If not, you should ask them to help you with
this.

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

I am having a similar problem, and this is a new laptop! When I try to close
Internet, the message comes up. It also comes up if I try to download
something from certain websites, such as Apple and Mozilla. I contacted the
help, and they didn't really help much. What is DaemonTools and what version
would I need to install to fix this? Thanks.

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Your issue is probably not related. Christophe's problem was likely
*caused* by DaemonTools - removing it *fixed* the problem.

What is the specific fault information for your crash according to the
Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel?

Re: Windows Explorer has stopped working..

Well, these are the details:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: iexplore.exe
Application Version: 7.0.6000.16609
Application Timestamp: 47575b9a
Fault Module Name: StackHash_8d13
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 03170fd3
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 8d13
Additional Information 2: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311
Additional Information 3: 8d13
Additional Information 4: cdca9b1d21d12b77d84f02df48e34311
Bucket ID: 652623574

It doesn't usually stop when I'm using it, except in a few cases for
downloading/installing something. It's usually when I try to close a separate
window of explorer. The error message appears, and then it closes all the
windows.

It seems likely that hpswp_subclasser.dll is on your system. Is it?
