| How do I transfer Vista to a different machine? My new laptop came with Home Premium pre-installed, and I also purchased Ultimate sparately. How do I transfer the Home Premium to another computer before I upgrade to Ultimate on my laptop? (Notice that both Vistas are legitimate and have separate Keys.) |

| Re: How do I transfer Vista to a different machine? You don't, if the copy that came with your first computer is an OEM copy. That copy lives, and if necessary, dies on the PC it came installed on and cannot be transferred to a second computer. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] rgharper******.com * NEW! | Re: How do I transfer Vista to a different machine? The OEM license for that copy of Vista Home Premium installed on your system is hardcoded to it which means the two cannot be separated. If you own additional machines you would like to install Vista on you will just have to buy an addition retail license. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry "SRGroman" <SRGroman@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F49B8FC9-B3F6-4942-BFEA-77BADABA5778@microsoft.com... > My new laptop came with Home Premium pre-installed, and I also purchased > Ultimate sparately. | Re: How do I transfer Vista to a different machine? You probably don't. Since Home Premium came with the computer it is probably OEM. If so, it can not be transferred to a different computer. Normally OEM is permanently tied to the original computer regardless the condition of the original computer. One of the many reasons you paid less for OEM. Is Ultimate an Upgrade? If so Home Premium is also bound to the computer by the upgrade. Consider returning the computer and purchasing one configured the way you need, probably cheaper in the long run. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar "SRGroman" <SRGroman@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F49B8FC9-B3F6-4942-BFEA-77BADABA5778@microsoft.com... > My new laptop came with Home Premium pre-installed, and I also > purchased > Ultimate sparately. By your own description, you have an OEM license for WinXP that came with the laptop. An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_ circumstances. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |
