I got a new computer which has vista which is completely new to me.
I've wasted a couple hours on this:

How do you get the security to stop asking me if it's okay to do
stuff. Every five seconds it pops up but I can't seem to figure out
how to universally just say accept what I want without having that
idiotic pop up all the time?

Where is the start up folder? There are ten thing loading up when I
boot up and I want most ot if out of there but I can't seem to find
out where it originates?

Everyone, running any version of Windows,
should have this. It will let you see and control
all startups from one window:

User Account Control is a security measure implemented for your own safety.
Turning it off will only defeat the purpose Security in Windows Vista in the
first place. A majority of the UAC prompts are associated applications that
do not meet the new required standards of the User priviledges in the OS.

I will tell you where you can turn off UAC, but I don't recommend it at all.
Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off > a
system restart will be required when disabling and enabling it.

As for Start up items, you can locate these through MSCONFIG (Windows key +
R) > startup tab. You right click the Start button > click Open All Users >
Programs > Startup and remove any items you see stored in the folder.

1. When you are installing stuff, UAC is busy asking your permission.
2. Once things are all installed and configured to your liking and settled
down it doesn't get triggered as often.

Strategy

Disable it for the period of time you are installing stuff and doing a lot
of configuring. Re-arm it thereafter.

How?

Start > Control Panel > click switch to "Classic View" [it's at the left] >
double-click User Accounts > select your account > click "Turn User Account
Control on or off" > uncheck the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help
protect your computer" checkbox and click OK

The Startup folder for your account only:

C:\Users\%your_user_account_name%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup

The system-wide startup folder:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

This may give you way more information than you are prepared to deal with
but...

Download:

[url]http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx[/url]

Create c:\ProgramFiles\AutoRuns and move the contents of the zip into that
folder. (You can do this 50 different ways but this is consistant with
pretty much everything Windows)

Make a desktop icon for Autoruns.exe if you want.

Make sure all the young ears are out of the room and run the program :-) As
long as you stay away from the delete button you're not going to damage
anything.

Hi, thanks for your help.

This particular computer with the Windows vista is a new dell, it's
not hooked up the internet. I just want all that security crap off,
specifically the little shield in the start up on the bottom right, it
pops up every five minutes. I turned off the "are you sure" question
pop up but that sheild is still in the bottom and I want it gone.
I'd also love to get the Dell support crap out of there. Any help
would be appreciated, thanks.
