I've been a Microsoft fan for years but this Vista situation has just done
it for me.

I bought a new top-of -the-line laptop with Vista on it. The amount of pain
I've put up with over the past couple of weeks just boggles the mind. I
don't even know where to start...

Here's the stuff that's been an annoyance _today_....

The laptop runs aero glass. The display is so bad my eyes hurt. If I switch
glass off it's different certainly but not better.

The laptop has an HD DVD reader on it (allegedly writes DVD+R DL) but 1 time
out of 4 it refuses to read a CD that was verified when it was written and
reads fine of 3 other machines. I know the reader may be bad but my gripe is
that Vista goes merrily on its way without even mentioning that something
didn't work.

I need to reboot the system to safely disconnect an external drive.

Microsoft mail can't spell check this message because 'the language is no
longer available'. I do not have multiple languages installed.

Windows Explorer is an abomination. There's this 'timing' element you have
to do battle with. If I try to move a directory from A to B, I either have
to be real quick about it or wait until Vista gets over its presumption that
what I really wanted was this or that part of the tree expanded. You've got
about a second before Vista moves everything on you. You have to wait with
your item selected until all this is done and then go hunt down your
destination directory again. Then wait again to be sure Vista isn't going to
move everything again. I don't know how many times the directory I was
trying to move to B has wound up buried 3 levels down in C.

The system disk and the DVD drive spin up and down 2 or 3 times a minute.
During a copy from DVD.

The disabled Administrator account and the UAC business is a kludge. It
makes the system more secure by preventing almost everything so people turn
it all off and you're back where you started.


I think my biggest gripe is that everything - repeat everything - has been
moved or renamed or changed in some way for no gain whatsoever. Even the
desktop icons have taken a step backwards.

on had vacuum tubes in it. I've been around. I don't say this because I
think it makes me special but because it indicates I've been through all
this a time or two. Considering the transition from XP SP2 to Vista, I have
never seen so many things get broken all at once. Vista does not make things
better or easier - quite the reverse. I now spend more time doing battle
with simple stuff in the O/S than I do with the work I'm trying to do.

Not blindly defending Vista here, but since this is a new machine and you've
only run Vista on it, it could be that it's the computers display or display
settings that are the problem here. I mean, if you installed XP there you
might find you were still having eye problems with this particular
computer's display.
Of course, this has nothing to do with any of your other gripes.

I'm in complete agreement with you. It has taken me five months to find out
how to do only a few things I did on Windows for 18 years. I bought two
books which are both useless. All I can do is ask questions, and I have
found even the discussion group pages are confusing. Good luck, we paid too
much for it to shuck it!

I started a topic in this news group a couple of days ago on this item
called "Visat + Nvidia graphics." I've seen the same thing on multiple
machines.

If you have turned off Aero and it still sucks, try turning off clear type.
I can't see things properly on any screen with that enabled.
I agree with you on Vista, what a step backwards.
I can make it work and have figured out where most of the things have been
moved to, but I still don't like the look and feel.
It's so bad that I have spent dozens of hours now learning a different OS to
avoid Vista and the Nanny (UAC).

I have never witnessed so many Windows Vista haters all in one newsgroup. I
agree that Vista is much more difficult to install than prior versions of
Windows. But, even the moderately capable computer user can install it with
much less hassles if they bothered to prepare their computer by installing
the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and conducted a little research before
attempting an upgrade.

For the Vista haters or those who simply don't know what they're doing, I
have three suggestions: (1) keep your Windows XP; (2) take your computer to
a professional and have them install Vista; or, (3) go buy a Mac! It's
much easier to upgrade OS X.than it is to upgrade to Windows Vista.

Stop the hatin' and feel the love for Windows Vista!
