| Re: Newly installed Vista x64 - Hard drive slow? It's likely the Windows Search ( Indexing ) service is cataloging the content on the drive. While it is supposed to be a "Background" type of service it will impact overall performance until the index is built. If you do not plan to use or need extensive searching capabilities then you can use Services.Msc to set Windows Search to disabled and stop the service from running.
